There are now plans to use this fracking technique to extract gas from the Lough Allen basin in County Letirim, which could have devastaing health and environmental effects if the poisonous chemicals get into the water supply or the river Shannon itself. Is risking the future of the Shannon basin really worth it for profits for gas and oil companies?:(

This is becoming a very big environmental issue in America and rightly so. These "fracking" operations are pumping a witch's brew of highly toxic chemicls into the well and some of it is getting into water tables and peoples' drinking water.

Also radioactive materials like radium and uranium can come up to the surface along with the waste water - material that needs to be dumped somewhere.
