I know this probably isn't the right forum for this thread and for that I do apologise, I have no idea where is should go.

Just wondering does the game work on newer versions of Windows. I use play it on XP, and recently found it again. Just tried it on my laptop (which is Vista) and it didn't work. The error message said "Data error (cyclic rdeundacy check)". Is this a fault with the cd or is it just not compatable.

Appreciate any help I can get on this or guidance as to where best to find some answers. Thanks

Try right clicking on the application, goto properties, then compatibility mode, choose Windows XP Service Pack 2, that should get rid of any problems that there might be with compatibility

Anyone know any stores that still have copies of this hanging around? No matter how bad I'd like to give it a go.

    Here you go http://www.tailteanngames.com/3.2.buy.php

I got it back in the day, no idea where it is now though

I don't actually have it installed on this laptop. Any other ideas, or anywhere you can refer me too that might have any other possible solutions. Appreciate the help by the way, my little brother really wants to manage a small county team to glory :D

If the game has installed, it means the disk should be ok, I'd be guessing it's a compatibility issue so running it in that mode should sort it

Sorry forgive me for not being clear there, it's installing it is the issue for me at the moment. We used play it on the pc but it's at least two if not more years since it was last played. Got this laptop December 2009. When I tried to install it today (and subsequently re-tried) I got that error message.

Oh right, that means the disk it probably scratched, see if you can't clean it a bit or if there's visible scratches.

Ok thank you. I'll see if I can get some disc wipes or try the old alcohol trick.

Ideally if you have some nail varnish remover, try to wipe in straight lines from the centre out, avoid circles

Why exactly narl varnish remover? Does it matter if it's alcohol free? I promise this is the last question :L

Ask as many as you want, I'm only watching TV anyway :)

Nail varnish remover contains acetone which which dissolve any impurities than might be on the disk as well. You might want to hold the disk up to the light as well, if you can see through the label it then there's more than likely a scratch in the foil and it won't work

Would you believe the only nail varnish remover we have is alcohol/acetone free. Would gin work?

LOL, Murphy's law, no point in wasting good drink :)

Try some polish if you have it, water will work as well, just make sure it's soft cloth, yuo don't want to be scratching the disk even more, if you wouldn't wipe a pair of glasses with the cloth don't wipe a disk with it

I'd imagine it wouldn't be great for the disk.
I would try and rip the disk with dd for some other utility on a good 5.25" drive, not a lpatop one.

Don't have any other laptops or computers. Anyone know anything about the message that is appearing?

A CRC error is a media error so it's caused by a scratched disk or something.
Can you bring it to a friend or something and see if they can make an image of it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭Mountainlad

I could try. What exactly is involved in that?

I have that game here still, used to play it on the home pc. Tried installing it on my laptop a few mins ago and got that exact same error that you did. So doubt it's a scratch on cd that's the problem.

Twas certainly an interesting game, you could win the League and still be sacked before the Championship! It obviously managed to incorporate incamp issues and murmurings :P

Yeah, I found that too. No where online anymore it seems though. Anyone willing to sell their's on, or even copy it to another disc and send? It's essentially abandon-ware at this point so it's verging into that gray area.

EDIT: as below, PM me. Reselling certainly isn't frowned upon, anyways!

It might be a bit grey, but there's still licensing implications that I don't want to be infringing on, so asking to resell/copy copyrighted material is frowned up, use PM if you must ;)
