    hi all...

im having trouble finding a 2nd hand carb (even a new one) for my 95 eg jap civic...

failed nct on high emissions. The c-converter is new so i been advised that its the carb givin the problem (the car also drinks petrol and is pretty sluggish)

any one know where i can get one? i tried honda and they said no hope of gettin one in through them and that the U.K is my only option..

I want to exhaust all options before i start ordering anything from the U.K

any idvise would be great :)

why does it need a new carb? probably just needs a major strip and serious clean out. And maybe new jets :-(
Ok if the throttle bushing is worn it will let air in affecting idle mixture and might warrant replacement.

There might be a kit to fit another carb available youneed to check - but you are potentially talking 200+ lids.

As above, There is very little in a carb that can wear/fail.
Have you had the carb correctly set up?

Have a word over on Honda-haven
As far as I know some lads there convert from Carb to injection. Someone might know someone selling one

I'm wondering if this car should be an injected model, and the "carb" referred to is nothing more than a throttle body. If so, chances are that the fault may lie elsewhere as these usually don't give that much grief...

I would be almost 100% certain it is and should be carb.

Most do refere to the throttle body as the carb but in this case AFAIK all the jap eg 1.3's were single carb engines.

yes the jap 1.3 eg civic are single carb..

it failed the nct on emissions and the garage i took it too (who i get alot of work done by with no issues) said that the carb was shot? he adjusted the mixture as low as it would go without cutting out and they had an emmisions testing thingy there and it was reading just on the border.. used some redex carb cleaner and put in some into full tank and took it back for retest.. failed again on emissions and the reading was 0.8 (down from 1.3 from first test) its a bit easier on juice but still lacks power bigtime (i know they not skyline fast but seriously )

anyone know a place that can set up/clean carbs??

Adjusting the mixture is only of any use if you are sure that the flow is good and the jets are clean.

Are you running the standard airfilter/airbox set up or have you an aftermarket filter? If you are using and aftermarket filter, especially an open cone filter, the standard carb jet will not be able to flow enough fuel to match the increased airflow.

not sure, but is there any lambdas (O2 sensors) ? Japs common problem, as fuel here is different. .. i mean in Japan they driving most of time 98 - 99 octane petrol, here 95 ish.

the lamda is workin fine.. a new cat went into it 2 months ago also.. im running out of options as i dont have the money for engine swaps at the moment.. the first time it failed test the reading was 1.8 then after adjusting the mixture as low as it would go with out stalling it was reading 0.8 (0.30 or higher is fail) i got a 2nd hand carb of another civic 1.3 and it went up to 3.2.....

    any one any ideas?

Hmm ... could be ECU problems ? Not sure it is common problem on hondas, but usually on fiat puntos it is common problem (also carb/single injector). Try swap ECU from donor car, or borrow, and see what CO is.

also make sure all air pipes are in good condition, inlet manifold sealed well, air box not leaking or damaged, as any air leak will cause high emissions. As from you describe, id be looking on leaking air.... cos fuel coming into carb so much , how air passing air sensor, and if it leaking somewhere, then in carb is too much fuel, which cause bad mixture (too rich) and bad emissions. If all that good condition, then last would be ECU which need to change.
I think CO cant be high over worn engine, unless it smoking, or some leak in headgasket (good to do coolant chemical test for leaking headgasket ).

Let us know hare you there.

Thanks for all the advise and suggestions... i took the car out to mcnamara's in fairview and they sorted it... emission are back down to 0.113 and it drives alot smoother.. so its all good :)

Did they just set up the carb properly or did they find some problem?

They took apart carb and cleaned it and threw in new cat.. the one that was in it was shot.. And adjusted mixture and idles etc... wasnt cheap but drives like a new car.. ok i know its a 1.3 but the hesitation is gone when ya drive "enthusiastically" :) but petrol usege has improved 300%

Good that worked out for ya. Sure you will make it back in juice, especially with the price of it at the moment.
