Starting to hit dead ends

    Hi all,

I am currently tracing my family tree, and I'm starting to hit dead ends.

I have the death cert of my great grandfather, but I don't have his parents names, so can't get his birth cert. Any ideas? I was full sure that I had found him on the 1901 and 1911 census, but the dates on the death cert and census don't add up.

Any idea how I can get his birth cert with just the death cert?

    Thanks in advance.

why not work backwards and get his marriage cert, should give his father's name & occupation

Exactly what I was going to suggest. There's nothing on a death cert to help you get a birth cert, even the age can be in question. Do you know who he married? If so, you can cross reference the indexes on the LDS site to find the likely marriage.

    Thanks for the tips.

I do know who he married (but not when), but I'm not sure how to use the LDS site (this is familysearch.org yes?). It throws back a lot of names and I can't see how people go about narrowing these down...

If you post the names and your estimate for their years of birth we can have a search for you... if they are common names it also helps if you have some idea of which part of Ireland they may have married. The census links can also provide clues such as the counties of origin for parents and/or children, or the number of years married on the 1911 return etc...

To search for a possible marriage you have to look through the entries on the BMD Index and find matching reference details for the potential bride and groom - i.e. same registration district, year/quarter, volume number & page number. If these match then you have located two people on the same register page.. so they could have married each other.

Thanks for that Shane. I've tried these but as novice I may be missing something.
