How to achieve a light ash blonde at home?

I've been reading threads about hair colouring at home with interest.

I've had highlighted hair for years now, with the occasional foray into trying a darker colour.

It's so expensive that three months ago I tried a home colour- L'oreal creme gloss 801 and it turned out not so bad- at least it got rid of my dark roots. Then I needed to do it again 6 weeks later but couldnt get the same colour so I bought loving care in ash blonde but it turned out quite orangy. So I did over with the 801 again which hid the orangy a bit but my hair is still not the tone I want.

I'd really like to achieve a light ash blonde at home but I don't know how? Any tips?

My hair is a mid brown colour, I think! I've been dying it for years so I have only seen the roots for a long time, although I now have quite a lot of white hairs showing too.
