Planning to do Dublin City Marathon. Did the Maxi Marathon in Killarney, so a bit enthused about this distance and would like to do the Kilomarathon. Anyone else doing it? Were there many in it last year - it doesn't look too packed from the photos? Don't want to enter something with some elite few racing along, want to stop and smell the flowers along the way...not literally, but will be slightly over 8 minute miles. And is course hilly, can't see any profile of it.

Hey, did this last year, was fairly hilly, I put the a link in the race profile thread, although i think i seen somewhere they are changing the course to make it flatter. Great crowd of all abilities there last year and I really enjoyed the race. Hope to do it this year, will be back from holidays the day before so I'll wait see how the body is

They have changed the course to a flatter which means good times, plenty of runners of all abilities competed last year and by all accounts looks like double the field for this years. get yourself to moone and support this great race

As it's on my doorstep, I did it last year and am doing it again this year. It's a different course from last year, half of which was in Wicklow. It's all in Kildare this year and flatter, but there are still a few hills. Just under 200 took part last year, of all levels. I finished in 2.35 (just under 10 minute miles), whilst nowhere near the front, I was far from last too. It was well organised with a good atmosphere.

They've really upped the advertising this year, so I'm expecting a bigger field this year.

Have entered, so will be there.

When people say "a few hills", are they testing? Is there anything of real note on it, any hill going on for say over half a km and what gradient? Not too bothered, won't be on the podium anyway, but would hate to burn myself out and find that there was a one km pull up to the finish line or some tricky section of the course.

    Thanks.

Have entered this as well. Location is close to my in laws. Hoping to use it as a marathon pace run.

ran this last year and it was too hard so i'm glad they have changed the course. Hoping to go quicker this year and will enter on the day.

Thinking of just driving up on the morning. I know from the site the registration starts at 9am, but what time does it finish, for those of us travelling a bit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 299 ✭✭itsalltrue

From what i remember last year people were still registering up to 30 minutes before the race. These included people who were signing up on the day

So all profits go to charity, seems like a nice way to do a training run for the marathon.

That's what I'm doing it for anyway.

Thanks itslltrue. Have entered already. Just want to be there to pick up chip and number, and hear any briefing. Now to decide on BnB or long drive prior to the race.

on the facebook page last night and it said the race starts at 11:45 but the website said 11:30 not sure which is right but i plan to be at the start line for 11:30.

Also i have been told rthat the first half of the course is a bit hilly but not as bad as last year.

Course is close to my inlaws. Am going to drive it on Saturday hopefully when I get down there. I know it's different driving but I'll try to give some indication here of what I think it is like hill wise.

talking to the race organiser and the kilomarathon starts at 1145 and the 10k has been changed to 1215 because of the local mass and to allow the chip company to set up

So should be fine if I make it for 11 then?

Maybe I'll just drive up in the morning so.

Well done to the organisers on a very well run event today.

I'll definitely be back next year.

It was a hard race yesterday but i was happy with my 2hrs 8 mins. Course wasn't as tough as last year but still one of the hardest races of the year. Organisation was fantastic. Loads of water stations during the race, it was well marshalled all the way and great food at the end. Its just a pity there weren't more people in the race as it got very strung out

Found it harder than expected. Was bowling along neatly thanks to 2 members from Tinahealy (thanks 60 and 91!) who passed me at about the 7 or 8km mark and dragged me along (or at least I stayed about 1 metre behind) for then next 8km or so. Was doing regular 5 min kms, like clockwork, up to about 18km, and then just got drained. Not sure if it was the heat (had thought it would rain) or the sight of those long straight roads. I am convinced that Moone is one of those freaks of nature where, even though you start and end on the same place, there is no downhill, only slight uphills, in between - like those roads where things roll uphill. Faded between about 18km and 24km, when I picked it up again thanks to another passer. Maybe it was the fact that I was on my own for that stretch, so was thinking too much about what was left.

Anyway, enjoyed it a lot. Surprisingly stiff today. Thought it would be easier. It was very well organised in terms of water and marshalls. It was also nice to see the locals involved, nice touch using the parish hall as the centre and the tea and cakes was nice afterwards. And they were kind enough to sit outside every pub and applaud us on the route!! Yeah, it lacked massages and physios but it was cheap to enter for that distance (I'm thinking of the €65 I paid for the MaxiMarathon) and nicely done. Unlike other runs, where you feel you're paying more for teeshirts you'll never wear, it had the feel of a community effort, brass bands and the Rose of Tralee and all that. I liked the procession out of Moone at the start, and then turning around and running back through the crowd.

I'll really hope to be back for next years.
