I'm probably stating the obvious, but overdo everything.
I put minimum of 4 double sockets in each room.

Fuse board too, leaving lots of space to add in the future.

External supply to front and rear garden, for any future shed/lighting/electric gates etc. even if ya just terminate them in a waterproof junction box, saves digging up driveways etc in the future.....I put down alarm wiring too for any future low voltage projects/cctv/access controls.

External waterproof sockets for vacuuming car/plugging in strimmers etc etc.

Think industrial for routing of all types of wiring, ideally something that you can access easily/change/add to. For instance if you mount flat screen tv to wall, have a hollow tube hidden into wall/plasterboard etc and leave some string tucked away running the lenght to easily fish through wiring.

Again overdo wiring for cable tv, put in extra points in bedrooms/kitchen etc...somday ya might want to throw a tv in.

A few of the teckkie magazines have great gadgets, and info on wireless/computer cabling

Buy a box of cat 5 and wire to as many points as possible!
Can be so handy for everything... from cameras to sound systems

I recently saw 2 double sockets one about the other in the one corner for a TV/Entertainment which I though was very handy idea. It even handy as a charging point for phones, MP3 players etc, laptops etc. All these things seem need charging at the same time.

I think its also handy to run cables to accessible points on the attic. Especially TV etc. Fit ariel for Saorview and stat dish. Run the cables at least.

Great idea from Emptyshed about the cable runs, my sparky wasn't too enthusiastic when I mentioned it to him so it didn't get done. If you're able to do it yourself, go for it!

I ran 2 x Cat6 and a coax to each tv point so I have the option of centralised (HDMI from a central video server over the 2 Cat6 with baluns) or standard (coax to a sat box in each room). Rooms that I thought might get a Sky+ type service got 2 coax.

I ran audio cable to every room incl bathrooms. Some rooms I may never put a speaker in, but I have the option. Consider putting a timer on the fuseboard for the outside sockets - you might want to put your Christmas decorations on them! Also consider putting a waterproof socket under the eaves for roof lights.

Wire for surround sound in your main entertainment room. Bog standard 7.1 should do it unless you're a complete audiophile.

I have power to the shed and it was suggested running a loop around the garden in case you want something in the garden in the future. I wish I'd run a network cable to the shed too. I could have stuck a noisy server in there then, which would be hander than the attic or similar.

Ooooh, good idea. That reminds me - don't forget to run a cable for your waste treatment system if needed.

I'd be worried about moisture/dust and the server in the shed even if in a cab.

Lights in your attic, possibly a frost stat heater for where ever your tanks etc are, ethernet (cat5/6) beside your bed for that lazy surfing....lighting cables to where you envisage your patio will be...

Do a walk around each room and walk in and out doors etc and pretend to turn on/off lights so you can see where the switches best suit you etc..(do this when no one else in house or you might look foolish:D )

+1 on speakers in your ensuite (cant beat some tunes when showring :D )

Put some lights on a seperate circuit with timer on fuse board for when you are away on hols....

Out doors sockets as mentioned......I even put a tv point outside where my covered canopy is...:)

    hope this helps

Can you get heated element cables or similar for outside pipes and taps, boilers for cold winters?

Heated element cable is called trace heating cable or trace heating tape. You should be able to get it for 100-150 euro with an inbuilt stat so you just run it beside your pipes taped to them every foot or so, and plug it in. Typically it kicks in at 3 degrees and off again at ten degrees so no chance of freezing pipes. I double lagged mine, tying the lagging with cable ties every foot and put it all inside a 4 inch sewer pipe so it wouldnt spend the winters wasting electricity.

If it was not too much hassle you could post your plans, remove any references and we could give you more particular advice.
what kind of TV system are you considering.
any thoughts on lighting, switching, dimming.
are you looking at high tech, low tech.
White plastic , metal finish on the accessories.

2-way light switches in the bedrooms within arm's reach of the bed.
