I'm not a vegan or a veggie but I'm thinking you all will be the experts on this subject.

Is there any decent ice-cream substitute that is not soya based?

I tried Boojah Boojah and didn't particularly like it but it also cost me 9 euro for a pot 2/3rds the size of a Haagen Daz pot. Suffice to say I was horrified!

    Can anyone recommend anything better?

You can make icecream out of just bananas, if you like them.

I've tried it, and it works surprisingly well. You do need to make it yourself though. (Also if you let it melt it becomes obvious that it's just mashed bananas, so don't do that. Unless you like mashed bananas.)

Freedom Frozen desserts are nice enough. More sorbet-like but the choc one is a good swap for my fave choc icecream that I can no longer have.

    Here's the ingredients
Water , Sweet Freedom (Natural Fruit Extracts (Apples, Grapes, and Carob)) , Fructose , Coconut Oil , Brown Rice Flour , Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder , Vegetable Fibre , Emulsifier (Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids) , Stabilisers (Tara Gum, Sodium Alginate) , Flavouring .

    and the website:

I get mine in JCs in Swords
