Suggest sports cars for under €7000?

    Hi all,

Don't know a lot about cars, but I'm hoping to get a good looking car in the next month or so. Few points:
    • Engine power doesn't matter. Want to keep insurance premium down.
    • Almost definitely has to be a saloon.
    • Should have rear seats. No 2 seaters.

Been looking at the Mazda RX8 but there seems to be a lot of problems with it, definitely don't want any hassle. Subaru Impreza also looks good when modded a bit.

Would really appreciate any suggestions as I'm a bit clueless with this sort of thing. Thanks in advance! :D

I'm confused as hell, you want a sports car with less than reasonable power, you want a saloon but go looking at an RX8

Honda Accord Euro R CL1 maybe?

Haha sorry, it's a bit late. I want something that looks good like a sports car (e.g. not a family car, SUV, etc.) but I'm not buying it for the power.

And by saloon, I mean something that's relatively flat in design (e.g. not a hatchback).

Will check out the Accord, thanks!

I think maybe DC5's, Celica VVTLI's, Accord Type R's and maybe Impreza's of that area are probably the only ones I can think of.
Or possibly B5 S4's... but that's a lot of power and slightly older than I'd imagine the OP's looking at. ??

Felt spec A4 1.6 should be ideal

For me with that spec it would have to be this:

Yep, Newer model Alfa's like the GT or 159 fit the criteria really well .

M3 are gorgeous, inline 6 rumble + 321hp makes this car awesome. And they're not subject to rice unlike the integra.

Engine is gorgeous alright, those yoke's above are nasty looking, that's all.

Now that Alfa is gorgeous, love that GT

I disagree, the op would more than likely get a 318ci than an m3, and there are some woeful looking modified BMWs out there. Very few distasteful dc5s out there, most I've seen look great.

No one buys an E36 M3 for its looks :P

If OP wanted performance, yeah the M3 is top dog.

    He wanted looks.

Not enough lift lad, need the 1.9 at least, more torque than a train.

I would have thought a dc2 was more about performance/handling than looks. Its boxy and old fashioned looking in the same way an impreza is. People respect them because of their ability

    Around €7000.
    Sobanek wrote: »
Not a bad car at all, 3.2 engine definitely wouldn't play well with my already painful insurance premium though.

Great suggestion. That's a beauty of a car in the pic, can't imagine how much it'd cost to get it looking like that though. Any ideas?

Good call on the Celica, looks well with a few extras like this.
Accord Type R: Not the best looking IMO.
Impreza: Looks great when lowered a bit.
    S4: Engine's too much I think.
    colm_mcm wrote: »

Bit of an Audi fan alright, think the A4 looks like more of a family car though. Good to see there's a 1.6 though, insurance would be doable.

Looks great with a few mods like this (doors just wouldn't fit the budget I think!), otherwise thought of as a feminine car as far as I know. :pac:

Couldn't manage a 1.8 it seems, insurance is already killer as licence is just new. Cheers though!
    Not a hatchback fan unfortunately!

Engine size wouldn't work unfortunately, otherwise good car.

M3 doesn't look bad at all IMO, engine size wouldn't work though.

1.9 wouldn't go down well with my insurance co. sadly!

Well I think op needs something riced up or felted. 4 door too.

    I still can't understand how can you argue: m3 or dc5... M3 e36 looks like **** but goes lovely, wheres dc5 ... Well ... Honda ... ;)

    Amyway. Op choose list:

1.9tdi felt spec Audi a4 with sticker: " no smoke - no poke.

    2.0 BMW 5 series with m-pack. E39 I guess.

    Octavia vrs ( I know I know )

Sorry I didn't explain the engine size well enough lads. Just checked my quote against a few of these and it looks like 1.6L is as high as I could go.

Right, I'll get slated. You want something practical with a slightly sport edge. As you're considering a 1.6 A4 you'll get more for your money with a Seat Leon. I had one, in the right spec they can look well, have a few "sporty" touches and tour budget should get you a decent example of the new model.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Ah but the Leon is a hatchback....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

It's practical though. Loads of room front and back and the boots a decent shape if not huge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I get the feeling a felt a4 or impreza 1.6 is what the op will end up with.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 24 Driver2

Thanks again for all the replies lads. Learned a good bit from this thread. :D

Probably get slated for this kind of talk, but it looks like what I'm really after is something I can get a good body kit for.

Really like the Celica with a body kit, would be a winner only for the 1.8 engine. Is there anything similar with a smaller engine? Seen the Hyundai Coupe which apparently has a terrible bit of cred, but to be fair this is some kit.

Anything similar to either of those in 1.4 or even 1.6?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 118 ✭✭GaryMunster

To be honest your gona get annoyed with a heavy saloon with a small engine..go for a celica with 1.8 and you will easily get a nice one for 5k and spend the rest on insurance with some change (hopefully)

I think a Levin would suit you down to the ground OP, with the advantage of actually being a relatively competent sports car.

Insurance mightn't be the cheapest but it meets your 1.6 spec and they're cheapish to buy so you should certainly see quite a bit of change from that €7k.

There's kits for them too if you really want...

You need to get quotes on certain cars before knowing what you can afford to insure. There will be a big difference between trying to insure a bog standard 1.6 car (something relatively normal and run of the mill like a focus) as opposed to a sporty 1.6 car (like a levin or civic type r).

Dead right, I can insure something like a 530i no problem with probably only a €100 increase in insurance, but I'd say my premium would double if I tried to insure a Levin or Civic VTi or something similar.

Nice STI Impreza here. Advertised for 3900 so you can spend the other 3k of your budget insuring it, might even have enough left over for a tank of petrol after :D
