I'm was in Nantes about 2 weeks ago. It's a pretty big city, but to be honest we didn't find a whole lot to do there. The town certainly didn't take that long to see (though maybe we were missing some of it). And it was horrific to drive around, it's all one way, the French are mental drivers, parking is not easy to find in the centre (unless you want to use a car park, and they're very expensive) and by the time we found the hotel and parked the first night my nerves were absolutely shot. And there was a dearth of lovely little French restaurants near where we were anyway. Oh yeah, and the shopping was pretty disappointing/average. They have a lovely Gallerias, but the rest of it was uninspiring.

We also went west for a few nights (there are lovely beaches on that part of the coast) and east to the Loire to see the chateaux (which was utterly fantastic).

Nantes as the sole destination though? Only for a weekend I would think, tops. On the plus side, it's only an hour's flight which really counts for something.

I don't rate Nantes very high, but if you have any interest in history you might want to give the chateau an hour or two. The city took a pasting in WW2, which means that it is short of charming old stuff.

If I were to arrive in Nantes, I'd hire a car and head towards the SE corner of Brittany (very close) and work around there. Perhaps base somewhere near La Baule.
