I wonder has anyone seen this Movie? Ive read the review and other bits and pieces about it and it sounds fascinating. Basically Bobby Fisher became the world chess champion at the height of the cold war but his mother was a communist and he had very anti-jewish feelings (despite being jewish himself!) and suffered mental problems. At the moment its only being shown in Dublin and Belfast  but hopefully it might be shown in other areas just like Senna was.

I'd love to go and see this, it's a pity it's only showing in selected theatres. Fascinating figure. I remember watching a film about Fischer a few years ago, "Innocent Moves". (I think?)

EDIT: Quick search on imdb revealed the film was titled, "Searching For Bobby Fischer" in the United States. It was released as, "Innocent Moves" in the UK.

I saw it and it's really great. There's nothing really new in it if you are familiar with his story already - but it's still great to see some of the footage. He really was one of the most interesting characters of recent times.

That 'Searching for Bobby Fischer' movie is another film altogether - not a documentary. It's a schmaltzy film about a child chess prodigy with some slight references to Fischer.

    Loved this film.
As said not realy any new information in this but it's well worth watching.
He had a Jewish mother and ended up hating the Jews which I found interesting

Searching For Bobby Fischer was another film, more to do with a child and now and again they'd mention Bobby Fischer in the background
edit: duckworth answered this already ^^^

Hmmm, might go to see this later. Will I like this even if I know absolutely nothing about Bobby Fischer?

Really want to see A Separation while it's still on in the IFI as well.

Yeah, I think you don't need to know Fischer (or chess) to like it. The guy was a prodigy who became the lone individualist from the west who could go toe to toe with the top Soviet grandmasters for the world title. His match with Spassky in 72 was a sporting proxy for the Cold War in the same way that Rocky 4 was, only it actually happened. Then, he seems to crack, becoming a recluse, and only popping up to attack the US, the Jews and anyone else he felt was out to get him. It's a great story, and ultimately a tragedy. By all accounts, the film does it justice.
