IR Receiver

Does anyone know of a USB IR Receiver which will receive input from any universal remote?

Some cheap receivers on ebay (HP Philips) say they work with "any RC6 IR remotes"

    What is RC6 IR?

Or does anyone have any experience of http://flirc.tv/ ? It states it works with any remote.

I want to build an XBMC dedicated box out of some parts I have laying around, but don't want to have another remote to operate it. We already have a remote for the TV and one for the Mvision Combo box.

I would like to use the Universal Mvision Remote to operate the STB, the XBMC box, and I can also use it to turn on and off the TV.

I bought one of these in Maplins a few months ago just for the IR receiver and it works perfectly with the Logitech Harmony One.

I took a gamble on the HP MCE receiver.

I bought this which includes a receiver and remote, and is as cheap as the standalone receivers I've seen.

lirc / winlirc has an MCE receiver plugin and claims to work with most remotes. If it doesn't I'll just use the remote that comes with the receiver.

    I'll report back with results.

For ease of use, rc6 is microsft standard for media centre remotes.
If you have an rc6 receiver you can use any rc6 remote.
There is a plugin for xbmc that maps all the keys to xbmc commands and let's you modify them via the guy also. Don't forget to enable direction arrow navigation for text input etc.

If you have a harmony remote you can map rc6 keys to that and control everything in your room from one device.

The eBay one is exactly what you need. Not so sure about the dx one.

Nice find, let us know if it works out for you.

In the end I decided it was less hassle to use the remote that came with the receiver than trying to get a universal remote working with it.

I have the remote and reciever working nicely with XBMC via EventGhost sending emulated keyboard strokes from the remote control input.

I did try to get the universal remote control working with the receiver, I attempted to use winLirc which gave me some success. I could see "raw" input from the universal remote, but the raw input was the same for any button pressed, it should have been different for each button. I went some why through the winLirc "wizard", but I hit a road block with an error message so gave up.

I'm sure the IR receiver would work with a harmony remote sending RC6 type signals.
