My NCT is due end of this month but I am moving away end of August for 6-12 months, depending, and would ideally like to hold off on getting nct done until I get back... likewise with tax.. need every penny for the move!

Will I get any hassle from the NCT over this after say 6 months elapses and my car hasn't been checked and do I have to contact the guards in advance as regards tax?

    Thanks for any help!

None at all. Just make sure the car isnt parked in a public place and you will have no hassle.

Agree, I'd also pop into the local cop shop and tell them the car will be off road for 6-12 months, and when your back you'll be asking to get the car off road tax form signed by one of them for when you go to re-tax the car.

The only thing is when you come back you will have NCT so you will not be able to drive the car until its tested.

Just some small but perhaps a few minor considerations of note. I wouldn't be the biggest fan of leaving a car sitting in the one spot for up to 12 months. You will most likely find that the tyres may have gone flat and have failed after that time if left sitting in the one place. Maybe best to get a trusted friend or family member to move the car up and down your private driveway once in a while if you have one (I empasise the importance of not taking such a car on a public road). Also, if left in the drive at the family home the car may need to be moved once in a while anyway to allow for deliveries into the house and so on. Maybe I'm being pedantic but think it would also be considered good practice to change the oil and filter before laying the car up.

Apologies if I'm bombarding you with what your already aware of or don't need to know and you are only questioning the legal aspects here;)

If you are taking the car with you, you might have hastle with the authorities there as it has to be fully road legal here to use it abroad. If you are parking it up here off the road you dont need to tax it or NCT it.

Sure the cops wouldn't know the difference between a Tax Disc and a Parking Permit on the continent ;)

    NCT Either.

    Are you joking ?

Theres IRL and UK Reg cars around the Hague and Eindhoven for the past 3/4 years with no Tax or NCT, same in Düsseldorf.

The cops don't give a crap the only people you have to worry about is the Douane (Customs) screwing you over for BPM (VRT)

What other country has three stupid looking pieces of paper stuck to the Windscreen ;) ?

You'll get fined for the car being unsafe (if thats the case), but the NCT doesn't automatically make the car safe anyway, i've seen some utter sh*tboxes pass it

Just because the cops have better things to do, doesn't mean they don't have a clue. An expiry date speaks all languages, and a quick google will tell them what each cert is. Any cop that takes the notion could screw them over big time.

I agree...some foreign lawmen you just would NOT like to meet.

Oh and Im a fan of those three bits of paper...

my car is off the road since April im saving to emigrate. nct is up in September but i want to put it through early to sell the car

my tax is up since april so what happens there when i go for the nct, is it a requirement to have tax on the car for the test

and yes i know i should have tax to drive the car to the center what are you 5 years old?

Nah, Germany and Holland they wouldn't have a clue, they think our Passports and Driving licenses are fake in allot of cases, at a Notary I got the "Did you stick this signature and picture in here yourself ?" :pac:

Would the Gardai know what to check on a TUV or APK Certificate ? or be able to check if the Motortuigenbelasting is paid on a Dutch car ?

Anyways, all the cops are interested in is giving you a fine for parking or speeding over here, they don't give two sh*ts about your documentation as long as you have a driving license and insurance.

The Douane on the other hand will take your car off you if they find out your living in the Netherlands more than 6 months and driving a foreign reg car, most likely crush it and send you the bill.

Whats 'the law' and what is actually in practise are two different things.

Pieces of paper on the Window mean nothing to a Dutch or German cop.

Pointless exercise all that needs to be done is get the form signed when you want to put it back on the road.

Taking down the discs would be the obvious step then you wont need to worry about someone getting worried about it.
