Eloping to Italy

    Hello Everyone!

I want to find out if anyone has been married in Italy and if so what their experience was like. I am Irish and my fiance is Brazilian, and we are planning to get married in May 2012. We want to elope for several reasons and feel that Italy is the place for us. As far as I am aware the process is relatively simple. I believe we need to provide our passports, long form birth certificates and an affidavit to the mayor's office in the town we choose? Does anyone know how much notice we are required to give and if we still have to inform the Irish government of our intention to marry? I appreciate any tips and advice anyone can give!

    Katie

It's not that easy! First you will need to get your long form birth certificates translated into italian. Then you need to get a Nulla Osta (certificate of freedom to marry) from your home country. You should get yours in Ireland and if your fiance lives in Ireland he will have to apply for this through his home embassy. Also you need to have the place/date booked before applying for this document.
The declaration to the mayor needs to be made about 2-3 days before the wedding...although I think there is a possibility to do this from abroad. Also remember that religious ceremonies are not legally binding (might be an exception in Rome I think) so if you want a church wedding you must get married in the town hall first.
In my experience getting the Nulla Ostas was more difficult than the actual wedding documentation itself! Good luck if you decide to go ahead with it.
