Quick question - I get serious heart burn after a run. Enough to have to drink a pint of milk after.

Any suggestions for combating this besides rennie?

Before anyone can helpyou, you will have to give more detail about your eating routine before running

How much of a gap do you leave between eating and running and what do you eat ?
Do you get the heartbrun every time you run, or only when you run in the morning / evening etc.

If it seems random, maybe you need to keep a diary to see if a pattern emerges.

Good general advice is to eat simple high-carb, low-fat food before running and leave a good gap between eating and running, but you may need to modify your routine more than this.

I'm the same. I have never been so close to throwing up while running as when I went for a easy run 2 hours after burgers and chips.

milk especialy and dairy products generaly are very bad for heartburn/indigestion so your post run pint of milk should be first to go.

if the OP has heartburn before drinking the milk, it probably wasn't caused by the milk

that wont change the fact that milk especialy and dairy products generaly are bad for heartburn/indigestion. so my advice is drop the milk cos heartburn is unpleasent before during and after a run. unpleasent even for people who run very little or indeed never.

milk is slightly acidic so its not the best to try and counteract heartburn. As mentioned greasy food before a run can give me heartburn.

best solution for when you have it is a rennie or gaviscon

but try to find the cause probably in what your pre run meal consists of

    good luck

Look at your diet OP I would suggest. I'm currently overweight but I've lost nearly a stone and a half and I'm eating better than I was and I notice that when I do that, I've little or no need for rennie. I used to get heartburn normally during the day or after eating something spicy or whatever. But since cleaning up my diet and losing some weight, it doesn't seem to happen anymore.

While we're on the topic of running and indigestion, thankfully i dont suffer from heartburn, but what i have a problem with is, with my pre race or pre training meal. while tryin to get some extra carbs on board i mite have a bagel or toast with jam maybe 2hrs prior, but instead of finding myself running out the door i find myself runnin to the loo!!!!!

if this is down to an intolerance of wheat, what other options are there for pre race meals to help build up the carbs??

i no a bit off topic but any help would be great..

My pre-race meal is always the same, dried porridge oats with some nuts added in and mixed with a low fat yoghurt about 3 hours before the start. Maybe that might help?

If you are prone to indigestion its possible you could have a hiatus hernia, which is when a small section of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm. Then acid can more easily travel up the gullet into your mouth.

Do you ever have pain in the chest after say eating a big meal along with a pint or two of larger. The gas can expand the stomach while a lot of food produces a lot more acid.

The standard way of treating it can involve using proton pump inhibitors which reduce excess acid. Your supposed to not do this without a doctors say so though recently many are available over the counter.

The only real way of knowing this is if you have an endoscopy done. A tube goes into your stomach with a camera. I had it done as i had swirling, belching and discomfort over a period of years. Annoyingly when I ran it tended to get upset and it also brought on bowl movements which made trips to the gym harder to be effective.

Another maybe help would be focus on breathing as the diaphragm control aspect might help.

Side effects of the medicine are known and maybe something like earlier mentioned cures would be a wiser course of action.

I'd say if you are young the chances of having this are low. My familly often have short gullets which pulls up the stomach so I think I had this going back to when I was 14.

    PPI's another possible help.
