Petrol into Diesel

    Hi,

This morning I put 1.2 litres of petrol into my Diesel 2004 Volvo V50.
After doing some panic research on the spot I then filled it up all the way with 62 litres of Diesel.

From what I can gather this should be ok and the 1:62 ratio is acceptable.

Can someone please confirm that this is ok?

I know there may be potential issues with fuel pumps and filters.

At that mix you should be sound.

Once that tank has emptied, fill it to the gills again and then have the fuel filter changed if you want to play it safe

Can someone explain why petrol harms diesel engines so much? I know sfa about diesels but thought it was a thicker/less refined fuel so I thought petrol wouldn't harm it?

It causes pre ignition. Diesels run at much higher compression ratios to petrols so the petrol ignites before the piston reaches tdc. I have seen bent con rods due to this.

Petrol also has very little lubrication properties and modern diesels run very fine tolerances and the lack of lubrication in high pressure pumps causes damage very quickly

If you put a mug full of motor oil in on top of the mix it will lubricate your engine and stop any damage. petrol has no lubricant in it. i had to do this myself last month.

I don't know where you got that advice but I have never heard of it before and I would be more than reluctant to follow it.

Also, the OP says they put in 1.2 litres of petrol and topped up with diesel. They wont have a problem. If they put in a mug of engine oil, they are likely to have lots of problems in a modern diesel.
