Put your iPod (or whatever MP3 player you have) on shuffle.
Post the first 6 songs that come up.
Be honest. We all have some guilty pleasures !!! ...

    Mine are....

Warrior Soul: The Drug - what a start !!!
Genesis: Supper's Ready - Im quite partial to a bit of early Genesis
Gary Moore: Wild Frontier ... alright song - some cheesey lyrics and a flat chorus. Great guitar playing (obviously)
Yes: I've Seen all Good People - classic.
    Doves: Firesuite - great stuff
Ramones : S.L.U.G. - great song, a rare song released on the extended Rocket To Russia. Class tune - shoulda been a hit for them (although you could say that about a shedload of Ramones tunes) ..

wow, nothing embarrassing there ...

    Who's next ? (remember Be Honest !!)

I'm doing the shuffle from my iPhone so the library isn't even 15% of the amount stuff I'd have on my big iPod/Laptop/External HDD/whatever, therefore it has also been [for the most part] filtered down to my lesser, eh, guilty stuff! ;)

Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus; very good song.

Limp Bizkit - Trust?; Sigmatic but cool and heavy enough.

The Hives - Walk Idiot Walk; Meh.

Black Grape - Reverend Black Grape; Alright, if you like that sort of thing.

Testament - Practice What You Preach; \m/ Yus! Every ****ing thick bastard of a bass sound, awesome.

Sir Mix-A-Lot - I Like Big Butts; and I cannot lie, I'm afraid... :pac:

    This should be good.

Ometh - After the Burial - couldn't ask for a better start, the solo in this song is worth checking out.

5 Minutes Alone - Pantera - another excellent song, headbanging riff.

Surf Nicaragua - Sacred Reich - man this is one lucky ipod.

Bay of Pigs - Machine Head - my favourite Machine Head song , no need to say more.

Perfect Blue Buildings - Counting Crows - well the luck couldn't last, that's fairly embarrassing.

On March the Saints - Down - back to the goods

All quality songs apart from , well you know.

Hmmmm, 10178 songs spaning over 20 genres, this could be interesting:

The Travelling Wilbury's - Tweeter and the Monkey Man - Never actually heard this song before. Wilbury's get very little air play at the best of times.

Rainbow - Rainbow Eyes - Yes! Long live rock & roll!

Megadeth - Take No Prisoners - does it need a comment? class song & album.

The Beatles - Come Together - used to listen to far more beatles when i was a kid but i have the discography on here anyway. Still good.

Rush - Lessons - i'm going to get ripped for this but 2112 is album i still have to really get into, i'm more partial to Farewell to Kings.

Nile - Chapter of Obeisance Before Giving Breath to the Inert One in the Presence of the Crescent Shaped Horns - FFS, i had to look it up online & copy & paste rather than write it out. Nile gets a spin the odd time, usually Ithyphallic & Those Whom the Gods Detest, but i usually can't get past the first song or two.

Ah well, even with 20 genres probably 70% is still rock & metal so no major surprises in the end.

With over 1,000 band/artists contributing to over 140gbs of songs on my ipod, I could get a few guilty pleasures poopping up or just some stuff I would normally not admit to :)

    Here we go.

    At number one we have

    Drunken Lullabies - Flogging Molly

Not a bad start, but makes me want to have a drink.

    At number two we have

Coward Of The County - Kenny Rogers

    Now I want a fight :P

    Making it a hattrick is

Higher Than The Sun (The higher than the orb mix) - Primal Scream.

Now I don't want to fight.

Taking the last CL spot is

Mutiny On The Bounty -Orson Welles.

That's the radio version from 1935 and unlike the three tracks that played beforehand I have to skip to the end of this as it is an hour long.

    Fifth spot goes to

Messa Da Requiem: Dies Irae - London Philharmonic Orchestra

And the sixth and final slot goes to

    Remember Tomorrow - Anthrax
A cover of the Maiden song.

The version I was listening to is the b side of the Black Lodge single.

OK, my caveat is that I'm in work so I have a very limited amount of my music available and no MP3 player. So I turned on Shuffle and DJ Mode in MediaMonkey and the first six tracks pulled out were:

The Easy Blues / Gentle Blues - John Martyn: Mellow, bluesy and making me wish I was sitting outside in the sun instead of being stuck in the office.

Jena - John Mellencamp: Been a fan forever, he's really grown into an outstanding folk//rock artist.

When You're Gone - Nelson: From the long-delayed second album After The Rain. The definition of a guilty pleasure, but melodic rock done properly without doubt.

Wildside - FM: Continuing the "melodic rock done well" theme of the previous track, an excellent track from the recent Metropolis album. Missed their recent support slot with Journey for financial reasons, unfortunately.

Center Of Your Heart - Michael Monroe: Love the new album Sensory Overdrive album that this comes from. Trashy and with plenty of loud guitars, the man knows a thing or two about catchy tunes!

You're True - Eddie Vedder: Pretty good track from Ukelele Songs, although I'm not overly familiar with the album yet.

An odd mix, then, but like I said it's from a very limited part of my music library.

    Gonna give this another stab.

Strapping Young Lad - Love?

Nine Inch Nails - Help Me I Am In Hell; Alright, not the biggest fan.

Beastie Boys - Hey Ladies; Yeah! Don't know many who dislike the Beastie Boys.

    Booker T. & the MG's - Green Onions; Awesome.

Leftfield - Shallow Grave; Good song, enjoy Leftfield.

Mortician - Chainsaw Dismemberment; Yus! ****ing brutal!

Feeder- Buck Rogers Can't complain, love that song

Led Zeppelin - Over the Hills and Far Away Good song from them

Judas Priest - Diamonds and Rust One of my favourites from JP

Metallica - (Anaesthetic) Pulling Teeth Haven't listened to this in ages, but enjoyable

Apocalyptica - Beautiful Really enjoy this track, very relaxing

Two Steps from Hell - The Legend of Aramis Not rock/metal, but good none the less

Happy with them, nothing embarrassing :p

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    This could be interesting...

    1. Foo Fighters - A Matter of Time. Daycent tune, one of the better ones off the new album.

    2. Pearl Jam - Dirty Frank. Not familiar with this one to be honest!

    3. The Haunted - Faultline. Again, haven't listened to Versus much but you can't go wrong with The Haunted.

    4. System of a Down - Soldier Side. Tune!

    5. The Beatles - Because. No music collection would be complete without Abbey Road.

    6. Sum 41 - Pieces. Brings me back a few years, but still a very solid song!

Pretty chuffed with that I must say :D Seriously dodged a bullet... my guilty pleasures are many!

My ipod is only 4gb whereas my library is 30+gb so this is an extremely diluted version.

Aqua Dementia - Mastodon (Good start)
    Some Grass - Sleep
Possessions - Strapping Young Lad (Awh yeah!)
    Electric Alice - Grinderman (:D)
The Czar - Mastodon (It gets better...)
The Call of Ktulu - Metallica (Good end)

My ipod is about 60% Rock and Metal and 40% Alt + indie so I'm happy with those 6. :D

    Todays selection ....

The Ataris: Boys of Summer - this might be embarrassing to some but not only do I like this version but I like the original too.
Yes: Changes - from the 90125 album - not everybody's favourite but I think it's a cracker. Great tune. (That's twice Yes have popped up on my roulette - strange cos I don't even have that much Yes on the iPod)
Van Halen: Dancing in the Street - absolutely rubbish - of all the Van Halen that could have popped up - this !!!

Taken from itunes on laptop, I'll do an ipod list later.

Little Green Man - Steve Vai
    - From the early 80's this has a clear zappa influence. Good stuff, but I prefer Vai's later stuff. Decent start.

    Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix
-Awesome song from one of the masters.

    Fornfamnad - Finntroll
-From Finntroll's latest and maybe best album. First bit of metal.

100% of nothing - The Meat Puppets
-Not really a fan of theirs so not sure what to expect. Decent, short instrumental tune, maybe I'll give the album another try later.

    Freddie's Dead - Curtis Mayfield
-Another legend of music, not hugely interested in funk as a genre but Mayfield is fantastic.

    La Chinita - Manu Chao
Ok, he's got good stuff but I don't find this song that interesting.

Looks like I managed to avoid any embarrassing ones :pac: Surprising lack of metal and prog considering my library but there you go. iPod will follow later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 841 ✭✭✭JBnaglfar

    iPod this time.

Brian Song - Monthy Python :p

Summertime Blues - Rush - Would have preferred other Rush, but its a pretty good cover.

Cry of the Black Birds - Amon Amarth - \m/

Dancing on a Highwire - Alan Parson's Project - APP can be very hit and miss but overall I'm a fan. Decent song.

Malaguena - Pujol - A classical guitar piece, short but good.

Origin - Borknagar - Great one to finish with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,020 ✭✭✭BlaasForRafa

    Ok, lets go:

Heart - What about Love - No idea how this got on my ipod, hopefully this is the guilty pleasure out of the way early!
Satyricon - Mental Mercury - I prefer earlier Satyricon records but this is decent enough BM
Ceremony - Don't Leave me behind - Intense shoegaze
Woods of Ypres - The Ghosts of Summers Past - Understated yet catchy number from Canadian Doom/BM group
Iron Man - As the Gods have Spoken - Very Sabbath-esque
Monument - Overture for Limp Piano in C - Weird solo piano piece....will probably never listen to it again willingly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,013 ✭✭✭SirLemonhead

Lead or Gold - Running Wild
Guardian of the Night - Accept
I've got to Rock (to stay alive) - Saxon

Diamonds and Rust - Judas Priest
Just a Shadow - Big Country

Not Going Away - Ozzy Osbourne
Starting off with the godfather of metal, not one of his best albums but a solid tune none the less.

    February Stars - Foo Fighters
From the Colour and the Shape album, Good tune again!

Quelqu'un ma dit - Carla Bruni
Sexy music from the sexy first lady of France.

    Driven Under - Seether
You know, I have nothing against Seether but I'd say I have only listened to this album maybe 3 times in total.

    Phantom - Justice
First really upbeat song that has come on so far. A bit too dance for my mood at present but how bad.

    Junkhead - Alice in Chains
    Grunge with attitude. Nuff said.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,065 ✭✭✭✭Malice

I haven't got anything embarrassing on my MP3 player but I'll do this with my music drive later.

Walls of Jericho - Discovery of Jones

I initially dismissed Walls of Jericho as being tuneless shouty crap. It was only after I listened to their acoustic stuff that I actually started to appreciate them properly. While I still think they are shouty, their songs usually lead to me nodding away if I'm listening. The part that kicks off at 2:17 is a good example. I also really like the fade out to the acoustic part at the end.

    Deftones - Lotion

Lyrics that make no sense? Blistering guitar work? Vocals ranging from almost ambient crooning to full-on screaming? All key ingredients for early Deftones. This is another song that never fails to get me nodding along when I hear it.

Within Temptation - Stairway to the Skies

The closing track from their most recent album. Like a fine wine, Sharon den Adel's voice seems to get better and better with age.

    Fear Factory - Resurrection

My favourite band playing one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite albums.

Threat Signal - Another Source of Light

This wouldn't be my choice if I had to pick a track to demonstrate the quality of Threat Signal although it does contain all the ingredients found in their better songs.

Arch Enemy - Dead Bury Their Dead

For a good while I used the intro riff of this song as a warm-up and speed-building trainer. It's great fun to jam along at a higher BPM :).

    1. Fast Lane - Vitalic
Got introduced to these on a trip with my class. We had some laugh driving with this and the rest of the album blaring. Strange for me because I usually hate this kind of music.

    2. Rosenrot - Rammstein
Absolutely love Rammstein. This may be from one of their weaker albums but its a solid song.

    3. Basement - Puddle of Mudd
I used to love these guys when I was younger. Their first album is still great to listen to from time to time. Lost all interest in them when the second album came out.

    4. A Broken Man and the Dawn - Volbeat
First heard these supporting Metallica in New York. Fun band to listen to.

    5. Rise of the Tyrant - Arch Enemy
Love this song, especially because of the speech from Caligula at the beginning.

    6. 99 Ways to Die - Megadeth
A nice strong finish. Some great riffs in this song, one of their best IMO.

OK, this time I'm on my computer. The hub of all my media. :D

    1. Breastfeed - BellX1 (:pac:)
    2. Boogie With Stu - Led Zeppelin (Nice!)
    3. To The Workers Of The Rock River Valley Region, I Have An Idea Concerning Your Predicament - Sufjan Stevens (An enjoyable interlude from a good album :). Quite a long title, though. :P)
    4. Freiflug - Megaherz (Perhaps their most well known song. It's good. Very atmospheric.)
    5. Crips - Ratatat (I like them. Very laid back electronic music. I recommend the song Nostrand.)
    6. Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2 - Neutral Milk Hotel

    More indie than metal there.

If Nailz gets 3 go's then im going to have another. I hope my extremely inebriated state doesn't effect the results....other than i can't type for sh*t.

Cutting Crew - Life is a Dangerous Time.......:o i like a couple of their singles.....bad start!

David Gray - Kangaroo. Really like a new day at midnight as an overall album actually.

Rod Stewart - This Old Heart Of Mine.....as much as think rod stewart is absolute legend im wondering whether i should post this post at this at this stage.....

Leonard Cohan - Tower of Song. Yes!!!!! The master.

Soundgarden - Mind Riot. I resent the fact they're lumped into the same category as nirvana, soundgarden & alice in chains is just good rock to me.

Scar Symmetry -The Eleventh Sphere. Finish on a high!

    Underworld - Jumbo

    Dr. Dre - Ed-Ucation

Metallica - Sad But True (S&M)

Trevor Dunn - Lying In Bed, Talking About Nothing; Oh god yes! Incredible album, incredible composition for the Avant Garde Jazz fans, awesome bassist too!

    I feel like a post whore. :o

Jazz Odyssey - Liquid Trio Experiment
Not quite as solid as Liquid Tension Experiment, but still weird and wonderful
    prog-jazz-avant garde.
    Bridge - Marillion
A band that ranges between great and dodgy. This is a short-ish opener to a
    concept album.
Tornado Alley - Terry Bozio and Billy Sheehan
The iPod seems to be all about the prog tonight. Two masters of their respective instruments here.
Driven by You - Brian May
Not too sure about his solo stuff, generally prefer (early) Queen, but this
song has some great guitar work.
    Midgards Eldar - Enslaved
Finally some metal. Blistering blastbeats, awesome riffs.
    Somberling - Galgeras
Dutch (?) black metal that is way too underproduced for my tastes, sounds awful.

    I'm gonna go again.

    1. Perfect Insanity - Disturbed (One of the few highlights of a lackluster album.)
    2. Fortunado - Hands Up Who Wants To Die (Great noise rock from an Irish band. Their lead singer is joint head of the Richter Collective.)
    3. Pony - Tom Waits (Can't beat a bit of Tom Waits.)
    4. Broken Harp - PJ Harvey (This is a good album. :))
    5. Rhinoceros - The Smashing Pumpkins (Never heard this before. It sounds good.)
    6. 747(Strangers in the Night)(Live) - Saxon (Awesome.)

Ok, I'll ave another go -

Duran Duran - New Religion - slightly embarrassing ... but actually the bass playing on this is excellent
Symphony X - Fallen - Nice slice of prog-metal but far from their best.
The Chocolate Watch Band - Inner Mystique - Quite hippy-ish...sounds a lot like Sabbath's Planet Caravan
Origin - Perversion of Hate - From the Sublime to the killer. try and imagine Morbid Angel still being good and thats Origin.
Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train (Live) - Back when Ozzy wasn't ****, ie when Randy Rhodes was in the band.
Iced Earth - My Own Saviour (Live) - Now yer talkin! Great stuff.
