Iced Coffee

    Hi All,

Every morning I make a big pot of coffee. Its my favourite start to the day. I also make enough for my housemate, but as she is a sleepyhead. She often doesn’t have time to sit and enjoy a nice cup of joe before she leaves the house – so when I get home, there are 2 big mugs leftover.

I want to make iced coffee. I love a cup after my dinner, but with the longer evening s and the on-coming heat wave, I would like not to waste it by making iced coffee.

I know you guys will start off by saying use a good quality coffee and I am. So what’s my next step?

Im not mad on sweetie coffee btw. I take it black – sometimes with a teeny drop of milk, but more often without. Me and dairy do not have a good relationship. No sugar and I’m not gone on cinnamon in Summer.

    Thank you in advance!

I've made it a couple of times. The coffee should really be made much stronger then normal as it gets diluted as the ice melts. Life yourself I drink coffee black without sugar. So I simply add ice to the cold coffee and leave for a few minutes before drinking.

I'm a bit of a fan of the cold brew method - tried in numerous places last summer in New York. Can't say I've tried making it at home as the kit is expensive.

Pop in to 3FE on Middle Abbey Street, one of the guys there has her own technique, and does a pretty good job of it, I'm sure she'd be willing to share :)

I know said technique but she explains it better :)

Sadly no iced coffee available there this morning :(

Hario have a filter specifically for iced coffee that works well, and ensures you get the ratio of ice to coffee right. Cold brew coffee is nicer/smoother still, but involves a lot of waiting, and a lot of beans too - basically you just steep French press grind coffee in cold water for hours at about a four to one ratio, and then sieve and filter. Dilute to taste.

If you're making it just to use up leftover coffee, then you should freeze some of it in a ice cube tray and use the frozen coffee in place of ice cubes. That way there's no ice to water down your drink so you don't need to make the coffee stronger.

As an alternative, consider making a coffee smoothie, with blended ice, strong coffee, a bit of cream, a dash of cane sugar, and a pinch of powdered malted milk. You can vary the combination by adding chocolate powder for a java mocha, etc., etc., and compete with Starbucks. Blenders are grand.

Sometimes I make an energy drink that includes coffee, vanilla flavoured soy protein powder, banana, strawberries, yogurt, pinch of wheat germ, all blended with ice. The ingredients can vary, depending upon my mood and taste.

The New York Times', Oliver Strand, has just written a fantastic piece on brewing iced coffee - see here... though his technique is unlikely to suit the 'frappuccino' fans out there.

Also for those looking for a dedicated home brewer, Hario's Fretta V60 Ice Coffee Maker will be available in Ireland from next week.

I got one from HasBean last year - v handy for us cold-coffee-only punters.

I make iced coffee simply by making coffee in a french press and then simply cooling it. Once the coffee is plunged, throw it into a pitcher with icecubes and let it cool. Works well once it's chilled well.

I made thai iced coffee there the last day and it was so freaking good! I don't have an espresso maker so I just used a french presse and made it verrry strong :)

I made one this morning using this method minus the milk http://coffeegeek.com/guides/aeropresscoldbrew
I used http://www.hasbean.co.uk/products/Nicaragua-Limoncillo-Pacamara-Natural-2011%252d2012.html to get some of those funky natural flavours in.
    Worked really really well.

Thank you all for the replies. I did go into the place on Middle Abbey Street at The Twisted Pepper I think. The girl said they dont serve it at all.

I love Starbucks frappicuino but the calories are just too much to bear. I also like a good kick from my coffee so I would only have a frapp as a treat.

I tried making it just as a filter with sugar and then over ice. It wasnt great tbh. I tried making iced tea too and again it was pretty dismal. I spent ages looking up recipies and chose what I thought to be the nicest. It was like mud water. I need to B&E the Lipton factory!

    Genius!

Many hot days on holidays in Greece introduced me to the frappe, which is probably the easiest and cheapest iced coffee. Its made, god forbid, with instant coffee. Just mix a tea spoon or two with some sugar (I don't take it in hot coffee but generally do with a frappe) and a small bit of water. Whisk that up and it forms a thick foam. Finish the rest of the glass off with milk and / or water to your taste. Delicious!

Then drink it through a straw over a three hour period on a fold up chair outside front of your gaff / business with shorts and flip flops on, thumbing a set of those beads and nattering irately to anyone who walks by.

Youtube video showing making of it here:

I recently had an iced latte flavoured with a shot of maple syrup, it was gorgeous! Less sickly sweet than some of the syrup shots.

If you're making an iced latte, which order do you add everything? I usually go ice,(plus or minus syrup at this point) milk, espresso, and stir...

With the warm weather yesterday and today, I was hankering after an iced coffee again.

My last recipie was a mish mash of all the tips on here.

I made La Vazza Coffee - really strong and had some ice cubes blended to make them crushed. I added condenced mik a little bit and then poured the coffee over and whizzed again.

    So so.

I see Insomnia have a creamd ice coffee concoction. I havent tried it yet due to calorie content, but Id say in about 2 months I will be able to :)
