Moments At A Game Where You Couldn't Believe What Had Just Happened!

Seen this idea for a thread on the Sunderland forum and that it would be worth putting up here too. I'm sure you'll have some good stories to share.

For me, there's absolutely loads of moments but I'll stick to 5 to start off.

Kevin Ball Hitting His Own Crossbar Against Newcastle: Sunderland were 2-1 up in stoppage time when Ball went to fire in one of his trademark crunching tackles. The ball flew high into the air and speeded towards goal. Thankfully it hit the crossbar and went over the bar but it's safe to say I needed a new pair of underpants after that one!

Cesc Fabregas' Goal Against Sunderland: Anton Ferdinand was about to clear the ball and with Fabregas standing in his way the ball hit Cesc, flew over Simon Mignolet's head and into the back of the net for Arsenal to take a 1-0 lead.

Nyron Nosworthy Break Dancing During The Middle of a Game: A couple of seasons ago we were playing Blackburn at the Stadium of Light. Nosworthy cleared the ball up field and slipped over in the process. He proceeded to start break dancing on the ground beside the touchline whilst we had an attack ongoing. He then got up and everyone who had seen it started cheering for him whilst he was laughing away. Really, really bizarre to see it during the middle of a game but hilarious at the same time. The man's a legend :pac:

David Ginola Copping A Mince Pie In The Face: During a Wear-Tyne derby David Ginola went over to the touchline to take a throw in. A Sunderland fan lobbed a mince pie at him which caught him right on the head. He threw the ball back in and spent the next minute picking lumps of the pie out of his hair whilst play was continuing on without him. When he joined back in there was steam coming off of his head for ages. Childish, but quite funny :pac:

Mart Poom Scoring Against Derby: Sunderland are 1-0 down against Derby and win a corner in stoppage time. It's the last attack of the game so up steps Mart Poom to bury a header and equalise.

1-0 down to Rovers, closing minutes of the game, a draw would keep us top of the table with only a few matches to go, Glen Crowe wins a penalty, up steps Jason Byrne, one of (if not the most) consistent penalty takers in the league.

Think it's the only penalty I've seen him miss, sat down in disbelief after it.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

1-0 down at home to Watford in 06/07. We win a penalty and everyone thinks this is the time that Carlos Tevez will break his duck for us.
But who steps up to take it? Marlon fcuking Harewood..... He missed.

Rooney's overhead kick against City. It was a real "WTF?" moment. Then a euphoric moment. :D

When Ruud came off the bench to make his Hamburg debut, still unfit, and scored 2 goals in 90 seconds to win the game.

I remember saying ''I can't believe this!! :D'' so I think it's worthy! What a day it was.

Now for an ''I can't believe this :('' moment. From the FAI Cup final when Sligo Rovers played Sporting Fingal. Rovers were 1-0 up until the 82nd minute when Fingal won a penalty and scored.
Then Gary O'Neill scored for Fingal again in injury time to win it 2-1. Heartbroken.

My first United match to go to with my dad. We were up in the East Stand, upper tier, right behind the goal. We didn't know it was a goal until we got home that night and checked the highlights on MOTD. Both of us were in shock at how far it was over the line, and very glad to have not seen United lose the game :p.

My first ever Liverpool game and we had gone 1 up thanks to an early Dirk Kuyt goal and then this happened and the whole place went bananas!

I fail to see what you can't believe. He was on a yellow, kicked the ball after the whistle was blown for offside and he got got a second yellow. The offence was worthy of a second yellow card and he was rightfully sent off...

This one for me too. Watched it with one more Spurs fan in a pub full of United fans. Absolute joy when we saw the shot had dropped over the line, then a weird wtf moment as we realised that something was amiss. A mix of anger and empty dejection when the goal didn't stand. The sympathetic nods from smiling United fans made it all the worse.

Yep, Fabregas going off was a big boost to us. The goal was mad though, couldn't believe it. Anton had about ten chances to clear the ball before he eventually did too. I thought we played quite well although Mignolet did making a cracking save from Nasri or Chamakh IIRC. Good value for the point in the end and when Bent scored the place went mental!

Was a little harsh I thought but I certainly can believe it, he broke the rules and got punished.

Chelsea's 4 penalties denied against Barcalona a few years back was shocking.

    But I'll go 2 goals.

    And this

Rogers was great, but sheros was late on so that wins. About 5 minutes before the pats keeper gave the shels fans in the north stand the fingers. Made it all the sweeter

My neighbor at that time supported Munich, he threw his telly out of the window. I guess, he was not that impressed with the result :D

But personally speaking, the last matchday 1995, Borussia Dortmund being crowned champions after 30 years. It was just like a dream

France v Ireland WC playoff... Even from the seats we had on the other side you could even see from there that it was handball twice!!!

John Terrys miss was sweet too as I had my jacket ready to throw myself in the Liffey when he stepped up to take the peno..

Being in the shed end Good few seasons ago when Cork City were 2 down to Shamrock Rovers to come back and win 3-2

Michael Owen's winning goal against Man City! Couldn't believe it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,426 ✭✭✭✭8-10

Ok I gotta go with two 4-3 games, both where the winning team were 3-2 down at the death.

Firstly, one of the best games I've seen on tv:

Spain were dead and buried in injury time and I couldn't believe it as I was really hoping they'd get through. Even Mendieta's peno looked like it could just be a consolation, leaving less than 2mins to play. The entire game is here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWw04jMkY4Q, Alfonso scores from the 3rd ball forward after the restart (where about 6 Spanish players charge the tip off) and it's a famous win and the best Euros game I've ever seen.

Secondly, the best game I've seen live, and the most unbelievable end to the game:

    Barnes-Rush-Barnes-Rush-Barnes....COLLYMORE!!!

So many unbelievable things happened. Fowler scoring on the first attack got the crowd going. Unbelievable atmosphere, I was high in the Centenary Stand. Ginola and McManaman on fire for either team. This was the definition of an end to end game. Came out of it feeling like I'd kicked every ball. Best game ever, still unbelievable to even see the footage. Game for the ages.

Back in the day when people used to listen to matches on the radio!

(Oddly I sort of miss listening to radio 5 live on medium wave!).

I remember the commentator describing what had happened and saying that you really have to see the incident to believe it . . Has there ever been a truer word spoken?!

    Hahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Another my "Moments At A Game Where You Couldn't Believe What Had Just Happened". Shels -v- Limerick in 2008, last game of the season, Shels needed a win and they were back in the Premier. One up through Anto Flood, 92nd minute, flares at the ready, the minnows that were Limerick 37 bring up there keeper for a corner, bit of mayhem and Colin Scanlon scores from just outside the box and kills off Shels promotion.

For the for the Shels were who were there that night, they will never forget it, I still remember the whole stadiums hearts stopping when that goal went in.
