I am turning 30 this weekend and I have decided I need to take the bull by the horns and join a gym. I have never been to a gym before and I am so not fit. What suggestions would you guys have for me to try and get the most out of the gym. I am going to be so embarrased going in a newbiew and everybody else knwoing exactly what to do and me like a lemon.

My first thought is why would you join a gym? They're usually soulless boring places which take your money and with the best of intentions put you off coming back again. If you're looking to get fit find a sport that you enjoy doing and do that instead.

That said, if you do join a gym don't worry about being embarrassed. Pretty much every gym will offer some kind of introduction/tour and provide a basic exercise program which they'll show you how to do. Within a couple of visits you'll be way more competent than many other users. Do set yourself some goals though and revisit them regularly.

Don't worry about that. The majority of people in gyms don't know what they are doing, even if they think hey do.

    Don't be ridiculous.
There's nothing to say he can't enjoy going to the gym. Most people who put in the proper effort and make progress find the experience of getting stronger amd looking better to be positive.

By all means take up the offer of the introduction, but I wouldn't imagine that the program you get given is any way decent.

I haven't an awful lot of time for the personal trainers that are usually employed by gyms but they're not usually totally useless and I think that they're usefulness is proportional to the amount of time that you have spent in a gym - in other words I think that a total newbie would get a program that they could build on. It's also always possible that they'll get lucky and get a good one.

The % of people actually using their gym membership is pretty small. I think that gyms are great for rehab and for preparation for other sports. I don't think that people are intrinsically motivated to go to them although some gyms do try to build a community. I think that if you're 30 years old, totally unfit and want to get fit you should set yourself a goal and then if appropriate use a gym to help you achieve your goal. If you like football - find a 5 a side team, if you like running join a running club or pick a race and train for it. Maybe you like the idea of white water rafting somewhere - perhaps you've always wanted to go skiing. There's a small number of us who can have the goal of getting fit and sustain going to the gym a few times a week. Most of us need something more interesting to motivate us.

Join up, get a free induction and program, and post it up here to find out if it's any use. Even if it's pretty sh1t at least you'll have a starting point, and the posters here can help you fix it up.

Set goals for yourself, that way even if you don't enjoy the gym you'll still have something to motivate you.
