Tuesday 11th October - 3 Notices:

1) Tender: Galway Pavement Overlay Contract 2 (Galway County Council);

2) Award: N52 Rathconnell to Macetown Realignment Construction Contract (Westmeath CC);

3) Tender: Realignment of the N17 at Castletown (Galway County Council).

A 2.5km realignment project for the N17 in County Galway (according to Notice #3) - AFAIK, this scheme relates to the large bend North of Tuam (correct me if I'm wrong). There's also a large bend South of Tuam - wonder if there are plans for this in the likely absence of the M17/N18 PPP (in the short term anyway)?

I would hope that, just in case, they don't bother starting any planning for that until we know that PPP is off. Waste of money otherwise...

I heard recent rumours, somewhere on this forum, that the N6 Galway City Outer Bypass (GCOB) could go ahead as a PPP. IMO, it would not be beyond the bounds of possibility that the N18 Gort to Athenry could be bundled with the N6 GCOB as a PPP with a hard toll on the GCOB. After all, such a package would be seemingly much more attractive than the current M17/N18 PPP setup. Not only would there be a probable viable Toll on the GCOB, but massive economies (at least in the short term) would be found at the Rathmorrissey Interchange (M6 x M17/N18) as only one bridge would then be required for a trumpet configuration there. The M17 could be deferred and bundled with an up-spec Tuam to Claremorris scheme to in order to provide a future extension of the M18 to Claremorris - that would be quite a long way off though. More economies would be found in completing the Claregalway Bypass if the current N17 was to be diverted from there to Oranmore so that motorists could gain access to the GCOB (AFAIK, there's no interchange planned between the current N17 and proposed GCOB). In any case, the Rathmorrissey interchange should be designed as an M50 style figure eight free-flow arrangement except with larger loops to handle higher speeds - a trumpet interchange could easily be refined to facilitate this. In such a scenario, improvements South of Tuam would be required - like everything else though, it's a game of wait and see.

Some great points here. I love it. A toll on the bypass is the right place to put it - traffic levels on the 17/18 north-south movement will be too low - and use
it to finance both the BP and the M18 Gort-M6 missing part. We can get Claregalway sorted now and worry about the M17 later.

It's not a could, it's definite (and has been since June 2009). The information is in the second PPP roads programme leaflet.

And you're right there is no planned exit for the N17 to the Tuam road, but then the M17/18 is supposed to act as a Claregalway bypass. The thinking of leaving the GCOB/N17 exit out is that traffic would still chose to use the current road. But that's a question for the GCOB thread.

Cycleways/Walkways have been a subject of recent discussion either on this or the Infrastructure Forum, so Notice #1 might be of interest. Galway (in terms of traffic/transport needs) has also been very high on the agenda, so Notice #3 might be of interest too. There seems to have been a slow down in road notices, but as we're approaching Budget Day, I don't think this should be surprising to anyone - however, I do expect to see a flurry of works towards the Christmas period like last year.

...when you mean the M1 upgrade, do you mean the Drynam (Jct 3) to Lissenhall (Jct 4) section (due to commence this year) or do you mean the previous section from the Airport (Jct 2) to Drynam (Jct 3)? If it's the former, then it's great news! The M1 should really be 2 x 3 lanes to as far as Gormanston (Jct 7) but that's another story.

Monday 24th October - 1 Notice:

1) Tender: Gas Works Car Park and Access Bridge (Waterford City Council).

Not much of a road notice TBH, but in order to keep ourselves occupied, let's crunch some numbers! The car park is to be 9000sq.m in size, so let's estimate how many spaces might fit in - here's my rough guess:

Each Car Space: 2.4m wide x 4.8m long...

Driveways: 6.0m - that would be 2.4m x 3.0m extra per space...

Gross Space Area: 2.4m x 7.8m = 18.72sq.m...

Access Drives (sides):
- SQRT(9000sq.m) = 94.87m (average length of each side),
- 6m (drive) + 2m (buffer) = 8m cross section,
- 2 drives x 94.87m x 8m = 1517.92sq.m...

Net Parking Area: 9000sq.m - 1517.92sq.m = 7482.08sq.m...

Parking Spaces: 7482.08sq.m / 18.72sq.m = 400 spaces.

Now, that's very rough and assumes a square car park of 4 equal sides (which I seriously doubt it is), but I would be confident that the parking provision would be well in excess of 300 spaces anyway! Also, the above said standards may be out-dated while my estimate for the buffer areas are rough. There would also be left-over parking space at the corners, but that would probably be offset by the area occupied by kiosks etc. I also assume that verges along the sides have been allow for.

Anyone else for a shot?

Wednesday 26th October - 4 Notices:

1) Award: Fingal County Council Traffic Signals Contract 2011 (Fingal CC);

2) Tender: Leinster Bridges Rehabilitation Contract No. 7, N52 Realignment at Mapastown, Co Louth (Louth CC);

3) Tender: Galway Pavement Overlay Contract 3 (Galway County Council);

4) Contract Notice: Refurbishment of Footbridge Crossing R105 at Fairview, Dublin (Dublin City Council).

Notice #2 concerns quite a big job on the N52 with a proposed 1.25km realignment and new river bridge to the North of Ardee. I can't determine the carriageway type (whether it's type 2 or type 3), but I have sourced more information (including maps) >here<.

Notice #3 specifically refers to 3 resurfacing projects (under Scope/Quantity): Mountbellew (approx' 410m); Lackagh (approx' 680m); & Danganbeg (approx' 385m). AFAIK, Mountbellew is also known as 'Mountbellew Bridge' which is located on the N63 Galway to Roscommon Road. Don't know about the two other places mentioned.

Lackagh is the first village on the N63 coming from the Galway end, has a massive hardware store which appears to get ramraided with extraordinary frequency.

Danganbeg is on the Dublin road out of Tuam - which comes out roughly half way between Abbeyknockmoy & Menlough on the N63. There are a couple of streches of that road that need a bit of work

It may look like nothing is happening here, but I've been looking for road notices as per usual this week, but nothing seems to have come to light on e-tenders - this is the longest drought I've experienced so far. With the budget not too far away now, I suppose local authorities are not putting in much more notices until they see what happens in terms of funding in December. Makes sense I guess.

Will be interesting to see what's announced on November 10th. Let me take a wild guess on the roads front:

2012 Major Starts:

1) M1 Drynam to Lissenhall Upgrade (part 8);
2) N2 Next Stage of Monaghan to Clontibret Upgrade (Part 8);
3) N6 Signalization of Font and Morris Roundabouts - Galway (Part 8);
4) N7 Newlands Cross Grade Separation (part of PPP);
5) N11 Arklow to Rathnew (part of PPP);
6) N17 North of Tuam Realignment (Part 8).

Further Developments:

As I mentioned before, I am speculating that the M17/N18 PPP will be totally repackaged with the decoupling of the M17 element and the inclusion of the Galway City Outer Bypass (GCOB). The GCOB would probably be highly viable as a toll operation once the ecology issues regarding the Western section are sorted out. A PPP package involving the N6 GCOB (tolled) and N18 (Gort to Rathmorrissy) would surely prove to be more attractive to PPP investors than the current M17/N18 setup. The Rathmorrissy Interchange would only need to have a free-flow trumpet configuration with provision for conversion to an M50 style 'figure 8' layout on foot of the M17 eventually going ahead. The Claregalway Bypass would probably go ahead then as a traffic relief measure for the short term.

I would expect the M8/N25 Dunkettle Interchange Upgrade to be in the mix - there has be to a strong economic case for injecting urgency into the project - I would speculate on commencement in 2014. I also heard the N28 upgrade is urgently needed, but I know nothing about the traffic situation there. I wouldn't discount the Macroom Bypass either. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a Part 8 proposal for the N71 dual carriageway towards the Bandon Road Roundabout (of course, undergoing a current upgrade itself). I won't say anything about the M20 - this road is anyone's guess IMO.

GCOB is with the ECJ due to concerns around the limestone slab where the bridge is planned. While they might have a funding package ready to go in the event of winning the case I can't see them publishing something a package for a project that might have to go back to the drawing board.

Also I honestly believe that the M17 section is more important to Galway than the M18 section. Given a choice between a Claregalway bypass & M18 or Clrainbdrige bypass & M17 I think most Galway people would pick the latter.

...according to 'Neworder79' (N4/N5 thread) and 'midwest' (radio station), the N5 Ballaghaderreen Bypass is scheduled to start in 2012 with tendering to get underway immediately. A total oversight on my part! :)

I take the above points and will leave aside my idea (unless it actually happens! ) regarding a repackaged PPP concerning the roads in Galway. The only thing I'd say is that the GCOB concession could be used as a fall back should the state default on its PPP payments - in short, let the company (operating the M17/N18 scheme) design, build, finance and operate the GCOB with an extended concession - probably a long shot though. However, there's speculation on the M17/N18 Thread concerning a new contract award involving RoadBridge, Sisk and AIB - however, we are still waiting for a concrete information source.

End of the road tender drought it seems!

We'll see what's announced on Thursday - I would expect a lot in the line of optics in the form of Part 8 schemes being listed - M1 Lissenhall, N2 Clontibret, N3 Mulhuddart etc. I would nearly put my bottom Euro on the N5 Ballaghaderreen Bypass (possibly the only project subject to direct NRA funding) and would also expect some movement on Dunkettle Interchange Upgrade (part of 4 year plan?) - maybe the Jack Lynch Tunnel will be tolled to help pay for the project.

We'll just have to wait and see!
