Help with home heating system..

I have just moved into a house that has a strange heating setup. There is an oil burner which heats all the radiators in the house when turned on, but does not heat any of the water in the tank in the hot press or any of the water which comes out of the hot tap. The tank in the hot press/airing cupboard has an immersion which when turned on heats the water for the taps in the kitchen and the bathroom. What I want to know is.. is there a way to get the oil burner to do both these jobs without having to modify the system? Is it just a case of turning a valve somewhere along the system?

    Thanks in advance...

Possibly, a few pictures in and around your cylinder may help.

sounds like there is a zoned valve that needs to be turned on,

Ok lads.. I checked around the tank in the hot press/airing cupboard and there is only one valve. I turned this and it is the valve which turns on and off cold water to the taps upstairs in the bathroom. I'm thinking that maybe the valve I'm looking for could be out in the boiler shed out in the back garden. My mother said that she can turn off radiators and stop water going to the tank from the boiler. Is that possible? Dont want to try anything too drastic out there just in case. Thanks again lads.. I'll get photos of the bioler in the meantime.

coming out the side of the hot water cylinder, about 4-6 inches up, there should be a pipe coming out, and another in line with it about a foot or so above it, the is the flow and return from the boiler to the hot water cylinder

On the lower one usually there is a wheel type valve, check this is open (if not open about 3/4 to one full turn open, with the boiler on you should feel these two pipes now getting hot, this is now heating your hot water

A pic of the hotpress would speak 1000 words at this point
