Im running a marathon in September,
Would anyone recommend some supplements or products which would provide me with energy for the longer runs involved in training and something for post recovery.

Any other advice or tips also appreciated.

Its not a competitive run just wanna cross the line in one piece.

    Thanks,

    Hi settopbox,

There are a range of energy gels that you can use on your long runs.

Some of the more popular are:

    GU (www.guenergy.com)

    PowerBar (www.powerbar.com)

I recently foound these after reading a recommendation for them here on boards.

    Torq (www.torqfitness.co.uk)

I found GU to be quite thick where as the Torq gels are bit thinner and easier to swallow.

You would typically take the gels with water and it would be worth experimenting on how many you consume on your long runs but a typical starting point may be try one after every 45mins of running.

Your local running shop should have a selection of gels and it might be worth buying single gels in a variety of flavours and brands until you find one that you like.

If you don't like the gels you can use jellies such as Clif Shot Blocks

For recovery I use chocolate milk. I remember reading somewhere that it has "powers of healing" comparable to dedicated recovery drinks. Worth a go and probaly cheaper.

    Hope this helps
    Dev

What gels are provided in the dublin city marathon?

I thought it was high 5 but I can't find them in any shops in dublin. I've been using power bar gels which seem decent

Try the health food shop at the bottom of Grafton Street or try bike shops.

I have only recently started using jellies on my runs. Thing is I find it hard to chew, I seem to get more thirsty or something. Would like to try Clif Shot Blocks as they have been recommended to me before but wonder if they are very chewy?

They are very easy to chew and you don't need water with them. Texture wise they are like little squares of Jelly, I reccomend them. I take some with me every marathon. Sports Beans are also really good.

They're actually very soft and easy to bite into - easier than a jelly bean. They're actually quite nice if you don't like the texture of gels.

I'm running the New York Marathon this year and I understand that they provide PowerBar gels. Is there any shop in Dublin that stocks these or would I be better off just ordering online?

    Me too!
Are you doing it for charity or did you get lucky with the lottery?

I also do power bar gels for the simple reason the first time I got gels they were the ones on special...

Im almost out as it happens, so going to try the new power bar fruit gels I think, as they are fruit juice based [rather than horrible goo based!]. I have a wiggle bonus code from the stuff I got there last month so may as well use it

the fruit gels are £28 for a box of 24 gels [with free [slow] delivery, you can pay extra to get them NOW!]
