Laptpo won't turn on, just keeps looping

My friend gave me a Dell Inspiron last night to borrow and already I seem to have broken it! I froze, so I held down the on button to get it to restart .

Since then it does the loading screen with the bar going across the bottom as it loads, then the little Windows Vista sign, then 'Update 3 of 3 - Don't not turn off your computer screen. Then it loops back to the loading screen and starts again.
I have tried pressing various F buttons and started it in safe mode, but still nothign!

When at Dell startup screen keep pressing f8 key and first choose "last known good configuration" if that doesn't work then repeat the F8 and then repair your Computer, then launch startup repair, if that doesn't solve it then you need to get it looked at professionally so as not to lose his data, Windows Updates playing havoc on windows vista and & machines over last two weeks )-;
