    I think its richly deserved,

Comparisons cant be made with the semi state executives that have handed back their bonus

These guys are in the private sector and deserve their bonus,

Lets put aside the fact that they have bankrupt the country,
That we have pumped billions into the bank
That its the tax payer paying the bonus,
That the tax payer is keeping them in their jobs.
That they have restructured or had a major cost cutting exercise

Lets have the private sector apologists defending them please

0.1% of people in the business world understand that bonuses are ineffective at enhancing the quality of someone’s work. This misunderstanding is based on the widely held assumption that the greatest source of motivation in life is the accumulation of wealth.

They could do what they liked if it was their own money.

Unfortunately FF reckoned this cesspit was worth saving and gave them a blank cheque.

Even more unfortunately the new government has been unable or unwilling to give them the kick up the hole that they deserve.

Yep - as far as Irish banks are concerned, the Irish taxpayer is paying the bills. Time to party.

eh, but in terms of going to work and doing a job, pay is the only motivation most people have.

Do you think I'd go into work and do a good job and get nothing extra when I know if I do a mediocre job I can get away with it? But there is a bonus structure here and I know if I do well I can get a lot extra, so I do... simples

The banks are owned by the state now, so they are public not private. For the record, those of us who are private sector workers do not need to defend genuine private sector workers who are getting bonuses. The bonuses and perks that a private sector worker receives are nobody else's business and that includes politicians and other public sector workers.

AFAIK, Bank of Ireland is currently about 30% state owned. That may change to almost 70% by end-of-week though.

The state the taxpayer paid enough to buy the bank several times over by this stage.

Some politician thought it would be nice if the appearance of private compan(ies) is maintained in the eyes of the market and ECB, who are not as dumb.
