    Hi all,
just wondering if other people have the same experience,

I went into the gardai station to get a few documents verfied as per the maternity form ( ie marriage cert etc.) but this gardai told me that they don't do it anymore and it will need to be done by a solicitor,

she said it applies across the board now and it applies to passport applications as well,

I am just wondering if this is true?,
or is she just fogging me off cause she is too lazy to do it?,

I would like to know if other people experience this recently,

    thanks

had that before where a guard told me they don't stamp the forms anymore for the insurance claim for a phone, as "too many are being lost" went to a different station and the garda there signed and stamped and when I told her after, she said he was probably having a bad day

sometimes a garda does not want to do their job or deal with someone who might have a "stupid" issue....we all have days like that !! (unfortunately for the gardai there is a commissioner who is "supposed" be to monitoring and investigating if matters like this are reported.

I'm not jumping the gun and claiming the garda should be reported just pointing out it happens in all walks of life, we all have a bad day from time to time, but at least now you are aware of the situation you can disagree with the garda if the matter happens again and if he/she persists then you have somewhere to go and complain.

(chances are the ombudsman would look at it and say well... its your word against the garda that this event happened and we believe the garda - they have no reason to lie afterall !!! )

I generally verify documents when asked. About three weeks ago a woman came into me with 35 documents to be verified. That's just taking the piss.

There's no obligation on the Garda to verify documants though. It is a courtesy to save the cost of having a solicitor do it.

Gardai can refuse to sign these if they feel that there is something, how shall I put this......off with the document.

OP I'm not saying that this is definitely what happened in your case, but it does happen. If Gardai are not happy with a document then they won't sign it, and rightly so.

When a Garda signs a document he has to be 100% sure that everything is in order, if not then the member does not have to sign it. Just because a member of the public produces a document and asks for it to be signed, doesn't mean the member is obliged to sign it.

The member is leaving themselves open to all kinds of trouble if they sign anything which is not correct.

If I believe that everything is in order, I will verify a document. But only once I'm satisfied that everything is in order.

There Is a direction from Hq that gardai are not to verify the documents and people are to be advised to go to a solicitor.

Some gardai still do it out of courtesy.

In Before we start talking about lazy gardai bad apples and the ombudsman...

Would that not be something that should be in the public domain? It seems odd not too at the very least stick signs up in all stations.
