    Hey guys.
Story is, I got my braces off just over 3 years ago. I am very good with wearing my retainer, I wear it at night on the teeth I will talk about I lost a retainer about 8 months ago and went to my orthodontist. She took a new mould of my teeth, but one tooth had moved back. It's still in the same position but the tooth had actually moved back before it was lost. Am I entitled to get my braces back on for free? I know people who have had them back on but am just wondering does the orthodontist actually have to? Any help would be really appreciated.

I got a nice car and only got a 2 year warranty on it..... You wouldn't go back to a surgeon 3 years after a liposuction or stomach stapling and say look at me- I'm fat again- that's your fault fix me again...!!

I know I'm taking the mick and am being a little hard on you... Really 3 years later, it's not the orthodontist problem anymore. They treat you and try to leave you in a "stable position" with the aid of retainers etc. No-one can predict and plan for your subsequent growth and inevitable bony remodeling and altered soft tissue/ muscle factors that can alter your tooth positions in the future.

Bonded retainers may have helped prevent your situation (and maybe not) but really anything your ortho may do for you would be out of good will not obligation in my opinion....
    Good luck,
    OS

Thanks Oral Surgeon,I see where you're coming from. The tooth has been moved back for quite a while,I said it when I went for the new retainer but she said it should go back with new retainer though. My mother won't stand up for me in the situation and would just critisize me :/

If the tooth moved before you lost the retainer, and if its such a issue why only tell the orthodontist now that the retainer is gone, is makes your story sound really suspect.

If the tooth had moved back BEFORE the retainer was lost, then that old retainer wouldn't have fitted in your mouth anyway. Which would have meant (as your mum is clearly aware) you didn't wear the old retainer too frequently? There's no shame in this, I'm guilty of not wearing my retainer as often as I should either ;).....but it's not right to try and shift the blame on to your orthodontist.
Also, your mum may have financed the original course of treatment, but if you're over the age of 16, it's only right that you approach this honestly& maturely, discuss your concerns with your orthodontist as an adult, and not expect your mum to speak on your behalf.

Yes i know she took a new mould of the teeth, the tooth had moved back during the 10-14 days I got it in.I did wear it, out of all my friends I'm the only one who would bring a retainer to a friends house or wear it after a night out and they'res haven't moved back :( Yeah I think I will ring her for a consultation tomorrow, just wanted to know if ye knew was it free really! :D

Ah fair enough. The movement should be fairly minor so. Good luck with it
