Pressure Zone Mics

    Does anyone use PZMs ?

    For what and why ?

I believe mics like the Shure SM91 are popular with some people.

The old classic was the Tandy PZM which I think was about £19 and was powered by an AA battery. With the addition of a few resistors and a bit of rewiring, one could turn them into Phantom powered !

There was a Crown one too.

Used them live a couple of times for kick drum but never recorded with them.

I've heard some guys like to stick them on the walls and use them as room mics. heard a few sound samples before where they were used like that and they sounded promising.

Crown PZM, the correct designation is a boundary microphone. PZM is crown's name for it, used inside pianos and stuck to walls for room mic's. It's proximity to the wall prevents comb filtering due to reflections, (it moves the filtering above the audible band) hence it's use as a room mic I suppose.

Never figured out what all the fuss was about, the fact that you can hide them easily maybe?

Filed under comedy mic technique, impresses the clients with esoteric value and might be useful gated/eq'd/compressed to fcuk.

Wouldn't spend ,more than €50 on one.

Know where I'd get one for 50 ?

I thought I've seen one of these used on a horn section...but I'm not sure.

Not a Crown. Like you say a pair of the Tandy ones might be worth a punt.

Putting a mic right up against the wall gives a similar effect- extended bottom end and greater clarity due to reduced reflections (compared to just putting the mics out into the room). I taped a Sony clip on mic onto the window for a drum session lat week, sounded great. On another I put one omni dynamic right into opposite corners in the room, sounded great also.
