SD Card problems!

    Hey folks,

I know SD card problems are more likely a tech issue but it's related to a camera use so I thought you guys would be more likely to have experienced this.

I have a 4GB Sandisk SDHC card that is not being recognised in my 1000D, but is being read in my card reader/laptop. I am not interested in recovering any data from it, just want to use it in the camera. I've used it before up to now, but the camera is now saying "no card". I think it needs to be formatted in the camera itself rather than with windows or another formatting tool, but as the camera doesn't see the card, it won't give me the option to format. Other cards work fine in the camera so I don't think the issue is there. Is there any way to format an SD card (creating the MISC and DICM folders), outside the camera?

    thanks in advance,

    Cutter.

Check that your SDcard is formatted in Fat32 or Fat16 and not NTFS in windows. Some cameras wont recognise the card if its in NTFS.

Hey thanks for the relpy, but I've formatted it six ways from sunday by now and the camera doesn't want to know about it. I've pretty much given up on it now....one last thing i want to try if someone can help me is to copy the DCIM/MISC folders from a working card formated in a canon dslr onto my card and then pop it into the camera. Anyone fancy an experiment?

Have you tried any other SD card in your camera. It might be a problem with the card slot on the actual camera, maybe you have already tried this.

    Hi John,

Yeah, other cards work fine! Going to format another card in the camera and copy the folder structure form that onto the offending one, and see if the camera likes it then. will let you know if anyone is interesed.

    Cheers,

This is what a 4GB SDHC card looks like after a low-level format in a Canon 500D.

    Disk /dev/sdb: 3957 MB, 3957325824 bytes
    61 heads, 60 sectors/track, 2111 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 3660 * 512 = 1873920 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdb1 * 3 2112 3860480 b W95 FAT32

I used the version of fdisk that comes with most Linux distributions to extract this info.
As you can see, the disk is partitioned and has just a single partition. This is formatted
    as FAT32.

I will see if I can make an image of the entire disc. 4GB is a bit too
big for an e-mail attachment. If I blank the disc first, I might be able to
compress it to a more reasonable size.

Is your camera on the latest firmware? Try updating that first as I highly doubt the camera will recognise the card simply because of card structure (Ive had MMC cards in a 1000D straight from a phone to take a test shot and although not ideal, even formatting wasnt required.

I would also check the card's casing for cracks as this can cause it to not recognise in the camera (also unlikely but check the card slot for obstructions).

thanks for taking the time guys,

I'll pull down the 1.0.7 firmware as i'm on the 1.0.6 that came out of the box.
