Hurler of the year 2011 ?

Saw a thread for Footballer of the year here so it seems logical to open one for the hurlers. (Apologies if there is one up already, I couldn't find it).

It could be argued that July is too early to decide who the player of the year is.

I'd agree, but there is no harm in discussing possible contenders during the summer.

Who would have picked Lar Corbett this time last year ?

I'm off to Limerick now to watch Galway beat Cork. And depending on how Ger Farragher plays, I'll hold off on nominating my Hurler of the year until after the game. But so far I'm leaning in favour of the Castlegar man.

But I have to admit to being biased there.

Ultimately, I think the accolade will go back to Corbett or Shefflin come September.

From a Tipp point-of-view Seamus Callinan has had two very good performances so far, Padraig Maher and Lar Corbett have also been good. Patrick Maher has been fantastic but he is not flashy enough to be in the mix for these type of awards. It all really depends on the All-Ireland final though.. the likes of Noel McGrath, Eoin Kelly or any of the Kilkenny lads can have a solid year but a man of the match display in September and they will get hurler of the year.

    Hon Farragher!!!

So far for Tipp I'd give it to Patrick 'Bonnar' Maher. His work rate is just phenomenal and nearly every important point or goal scored has been helped by him.

Again I'm biased for tipp so wouldnt know who else to pick.

Of the matches I have seen this year (Not a whole lot actually), Liam Rushe has always looked excellent for Dublin.

But this will be decided in the QF's, SF's & final. Thats when the real winners stand up. Thats what makes them winners!

Doubt he will win HOTY, he doesn't score enough as a forward for the journo's to consider him for the award. Definate All-Star IMO.

At the moment, its probably between Callinan, Padraig Maher and Shefflin but it could well depend on who plays well in the AI final (and also who wins it).

I think fennellly has a real chance of winning it, but only if Kilkenny win the all Ireland

Callinan is the main contender for me, but bonner maher and paudie maher have put themselves in with a shot.

Agreed - he would have won the award last year if KK had beaten Tipp in the final.

no mention of Tommy Walsh yet  was unbelievable as usual against Dublin. My money will go on Tommy anyway.

Lar Corbett or Joe Canning, will be between these two

Canning was bad against Dublin but has been unreal in the past two games. But so far it's Lar Corbett all the way.

Depending how far Galway get Joe Canning will be in with a good shot at it

Farragher or Lar so far for me. Canning isnt even galways best player dont mind player of the year. Damien Hayes after yesterdays performance can be in with a shout and of course bonner for tip too.

Im amazed aswell that Walsh hasn't got a mention. If KK go on to win or reach the final I think him and Mick Fennelly will be right up there. From Tipp your bound to have Corbett,Padraic Maher,Kelly or Mcgrath.

Lar will robably get it if he keeps banging them in.

Hard to see it being anyone other than Lar Corbett at this stage tbh... maybe Eoin Kelly or Canning at a push.

Gavin O'Mahony has started out brightly. Hopefully he get more time to shine this year. He has great heart.

Lar Corbett must be favourite now..Was starved of posession for long periods and still got 1-3

+1, Tipp were out the gap in the first half today without him.

    He carried them.

Lar was excellent in the first half considering the amount of ball he got, but in saying that, he was fairly anonymous in the second half! He has a habit of ghosting in and out of matches. I don't think he has been as good this year as he was last (I know he has banged in the goals!).

So far I'd give it to P Maher, he's been Tipp's outstanding performer and has dominated in every game so far.

Having said all that, KK v Tipp is THE game we have all been expecting and waiting for all year. One big game defining performance by someone in this game, between arguably the two most talented teams to ever play the game, could clinch the player of the year award imo

(don't tell me we have to sit through weeks of football before we get to see a decent game of hurling again! ;))
