Here you have it folks: "Hollywood’s first offering to feature an openly atheist hero in a story about religious conflict."

No, the hero is not a gay atheist; the "Brokeback Mountain" reference is the hope to help Americans be more accepting of atheism, just like Brokeback Mountain was for gays and lesbians (according to recent polls).

I know it's an independent film, but it was nominated for best drama at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and opens today (Friday) in Los Angeles and New York.

You can watch the movie here: http://www.sundancenow.com/film/the-ledge/673 (Warning: it costs money).

What I find fascinating is that the film is written and directed by Matthew Chapman .................. who is a great-great grandson of Charles Darwin.

More info on this CNN blog: http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2011/07/08/new-atheist-movie-the-ledge-evangelizes-godlessness/?&hpt=hp_c2
It's obviously kicking up a firestorm with the amount of comments in one day on the subject.

That's a fairly unambiguous statement to make.

Its 7.2 on imdb but only after 500+ votes so doesn't mean much. Anyway, downloading it now will report after watching.

It's got a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes so I wouldn't have a major interest in it to be honest. :D

From the RT reviews this movie seems to exist purely as a discussion point, rather than as a drama in of itself. That is never a good sign, no matter what the movie is.

Even if the movie sucks, the fact that it becomes a conversation piece is enough for me (but probably not for the director). 3,500 comments about it already after one day on a CNN blog.

If it casts any doubt on religion, or opens a few eyes, then it did its job.

I'd be curious on what axer has to say after watching the movie ......

By the way, the trailer is in the link on the first post.

Brokeback Mountain was an exceptional film as well as featuring controvertial subject matter. This is important.

EDIT: Oh hey it has Charlie Hunnam *swoon*

The film is ok. Not 7.2 but maybe 6.8 (watchable solely for the topic but nothing I would consider particularly good). Liv Tyler has proved once again to be a terrible actor.
