Go to http://www.motortax.ie/ and click on 'Vehicle Transaction Enquiry'.

If the previous owner has sent in the vehicle registration cert., then you should get it in about a week. I would have thought that July is a quiet month in the motor trade so there shouldn't be much of a backlog in Shannon. How long ago since you bought the car?

You can tax it online using the VIN number

Good point, I know I did it before without a tax book but the car was mine (I had just imported it)

Only if the car is brand new or has been recently imported.

From what I've read on http://www.environ.ie/en/LocalGovernment/MotorTax/ there's no mention you have to be the registered owner, and it's the same on the renewal forms.

Well your okay up till 2 or 3 months, if a copper is doing a check point for tax and insurance anything after 2 or 3 months not sure which it is but they can automatically seize your car. But most will give you grace if you have just purchased a car dont worry too much you should have log book about a month after purchase

    He means he wasn't punished.

@OP all you can really do is contact shannon to see if it's arrived or has been changed over yet and posted out. If it doesnt come in another week then you may as well assume the previous owner didn't send it. Then you need to apply for a new tax book in your name. There's a special for for it that you can get from the motor tax office. You have to get a commissioner for oaths or solicitor to sign off on it and also get a main dealer to say that the vehicle genuinely is what it is. Then you can get the new book sent out in your name
