In my opinion you'd be a bit foolish to buy one if you just want something for cheap transport to get you around. They deserve their bad reputation.

An ex of mine had a 2001 1.6 for 5 years, during which time nothing went wrong. Sweet little car, I liked it.

The Megane I doesnt have a bad reputation.

Much like the Laguna I though (and Laguna III acording to the man down the pub) it is said to be a bucket of ****e because the bad reputation of the model that came after it is being retroactively applied to it.

I've an 01 Scenic 1.4 thats been owned by myself or a friend since 2003. 82,000 miles, not one single breakdown or repair needed in that time. A neighbour has a similar story with an 00 model with ca 115,000 miles on the clock.

cousin has had one for the last 10 years and just changed it for a SUV under the scrappage scheme. the ONLY reason it was kept for that long was to keep it to be used in the scrappage scheme. tried to sell it 3 years ago for 1500 and couldn't get it.

while there wasn't anything wrong mechanically, it was a POS. 2K for a 10 year old one?

Nice little car, fun to drive and solid. 97 with 1.6 is nippy and zippy with short wheelbase; though not great over 80 on the motorway.

Crap boot and a bit hairdresser porche but I think it looks good, and very few probems to 110k miles.

The biggest issue you will find with the Megane Coupé are the delusional owners who seem to always think their car is worth between double to triple it's market value. I never came across an owner in all my years selling cars who had a realistic expectation for the value of their Megane Coupé.

So you have never heard of the constant ignition problems? bad rear suspension? dodgy switchgear etc?

When people bash Renault on this forum they are usually vague and exaggerate. Saying that the Megane I has constant ignition problems is a good example of this.

The main problems that the car is known for are plug coils and flywheel sensors, both easy and cheap fixes and certainly not "constant". For instance we have a 99 Megane on its original plug coils from new.

The Megane I is not known for bad rear suspension.

Some people actually own these cars so don't have to rely on what they've "heard" about them.
