Friend of mine is looking for a nice clean 520 E39.

Must be either 02/03, leather, a/c, alloys, etc.

    Preferably M-Tech spec and M-Pars

Low mileage (for year) and long NCT a must.

    All for under €4k!

    Thanks!

It takes less time to do a search on Carzone than to write the above post. Plenty for sale out there - it's finding the right one that counts. ;)

He's not gonna find an M-Sport in that year with low mileage for under €4k. He needs €5-€6 minimum for a half decent one.

Real petrolhead has autotrader or his Internet by the craper, even if he does not looking for a car to buy, he still browses ;)

Op, I don't know if 4k will find him nice e39 mkited. You newer know thought!

Theres nothing remotely close to that price range, even on Pistonheads, just had a look. He needs to save for a few more months. :)

you wont get all of what you are looking for but you can have 2 of the following 4
    low mileage
    sport
    2002
    mint exterior

this wont be hard to find
    leather

    these are standard
    air con
    alloys

you will never find enough of a selection with
    m-pars

    or pay more money :)

He could probably stretch to €5k for the right car so I suppose anything with an asking price of up to €5750 or so. Could probably stretch to a 523 as well. That should give us more to work with!

Mines currently at 82k Miles and will be up for sale in the next 2 months once I get my new car from work.

I wouldn't take less than €6,500 for it as I know how hard it is to find a decent one with a full history and original M5 wheels.

    2002 M-Sport

Lovely looking machine but he ain't gonna spend that much. What's work getting you?

I called about this, NCT just out but booked in for Monday. Said he wants 'as close to €5k as possible' for it. No mention of service history but a mechanic would be checking it out anyway.

No such thing as a minter in Ireland without it being "touched up" - and then you cant be 100% sure of what else was "touched up"....

If it was me I would rather the car with no paint newer than the original and the odd chip and dent... at the end of the day He could get them repaired himself....

My way of being cheeky :D

I reckon it's possible to get one in budget. It all depends on the seller. Some might believe they cost a lot to run and are therefore worthless these days while others will reckon they are still worth more. It's a matter of being patient with them.

Do you know anyone in the trade as they are most likely to come across a good one cheap although finding a low mileage one may not be easy. Also make sure and tell your mate that low mileage isn't always good.

He's very happy with the one I linked on the first page. Going to see it tomorrow. It's an '02 M-Tech 520 and from the sounds of things he'll let it go for under €5k and the buyer is happy to stretch to that.

the E39 facelift m sports are absolutely gorgeouos cars, possibly my favourite ever bmw, they just look unreal. The 520 in an auto wont exactly be quick however! OP is your bro looking for manual or auto?

Sold as seen, why would someone say that?

I've always liked the E39.. think a nice 525 diesel auto in black or dark grey would look well :) Preferably without the wood interior though as I think it looks very old-fashioned in that car!

I've actually thought about trading in the 06 2L TDI Passat for a late 02/03 one every so often, or would that be mad altogether?

Not many sellers including interior pics these days - I'd find this annoying and offputting if I was looking myself.

The last one (2003) looks mint inside and out though.

Can you comment on the condition of this? Looks great but sometimes in the flesh cars aren't as clean as they appear.

If you feel you shouldn't that's cool!

I'll be 100% honest with you.

I haven't done much mechanical work on the car yet at all. We usually wait till a customer is happy with the car and then if anything needs attention it will be sorted out. All our cars are sold with a full NCT and are fully serviced before they leave so anything that needs to be done WILL be done.

The only work I done on the car was last week when the wiper linkage seized and burnt out the motor. So I replaced them both with genuine parts from we bought from Frank Keanes. (The parts cost around €600 by the way!)

The car does look gorgeous in the flesh though I have to admit. You'll see that yourself though tomorrow.
I'm not a salesman by the way, I'm the mechanic, so it makes no odds to me if you buy it or not so don't think I'm giving you a sales pitch. Its just my honest opinion.

Fair play for answering - I'm not going out with him tomorrow but it will look well parked beside my 7er in work.

I have very high standards. :D

If the OP was looking for an 03, sub 80k M Sport E39 with M-Parallels like he specified, you would want €6k minimum. And thats if you can find one.

I think that one in Premier is a good find in fairness especially if they're willing to take less than €5k.

Really nice looking motor, especially de-chromed but I wouldn't take a car from Barclay if they gave it to me free.

What ever one you buy, just make sure you get if fully checked over by an independent mechanic who knows E39s before you hand over the cash.

They are a fantastic car, but a lemon will empty your wallet fairly sharpish!

Have mine since Dec 2009 & 30k+ miles later it's still as strong as the day I got it, mainly due to changing the oil myself between services and also a preemptive suspension bushing refresh at 75k miles.

Only issues have been a water pump going and paying for the petrol!

It's not for me but for my boss! A friend of mine is ex-BMW but a 'fixer' as opposed to a 'fitter' and well qualified to look her over. TBH I wouldn't mind changing my '99 E38 for this car. They put out 170bhp from the factory which is just 1bhp shy of what the pre-facelift 523 was putting out.

I love the 7er but would be happy enough in that E39 TBH. Would miss the power on tap but it would do the job adequately enough I reckon. Anyhow, enough of the sensible talk - when it's time to ditch the 7 I'll only be adding '1'! :)
