Hey guys just wondering if it is common practice for an employer to take 50% of pooled tips for themselves? Is it even legal?

    Thanks.

    Paul.

AFAIK there are no regulations on tips in Ireland.

Are the tips given by the customer in cash or is there a service charge in the restaurant?

Does the employer keep the money for himself or does he split it amongst kitchen staff?

I work in a casino so therefore tips are given by customers via chips, the chips have a real money value and are dropped into a drop-box upon receipt.

The tips are then pooled, handled and given out monthly by the owner, however as far as i am aware, only 50% of tips received by customers are given back to staff on an hourly basis, e.g 2 euro an hour for 100 hours work. The rest kept between the owners and put back into the business i assume.

In a restaurant, I will always ask if the tips go to staff or owners, if they go to owners I don't tip. Simple. If however they go to staff....
