pedestrian/zebra crossing

A motor related question, Can a cyclist use a pedestrian crossing to cross the road that goes through two lanes of traffic?

I was driving today in traffic and a cyclist crossed the pedestrian/zebra crossing at speed, I was going slow and still only barely saw him as my view was obstructed from the cars in my left lane. I saw the pedestrian/zebra crossing and was anticipating that a pedestrian could be crossing on my approach and all of a sudden a cyclist jets by through the zebra crossing as if he was in no danger.

I was lucky I didnt knock him down but I reacted quickly. The guy stuck up his fingers to me as he went by.

    Thoughts.

A cyclist is required to dismount and walk across a pedestrian crossing just like, well a pedestrian. Just as well you were on the ball. Btw, did this incident occur during a traffic jam/crawling; if not then surely other traffic stopping at the crossing would have been a strong hint that something was coming your way?

It was during a crawl and traffic jam. I was on left lane at first and then switched over to my right. The left lane was fully blocked with traffic but I needed to go around a roundabout and needed to be in my right lane. That right lane was empty and my approach was very slow and out of nowhere a cyclist flies past the zebra crossing. My view was obstructed from the cars on my left but like I said I was aware of the pedestrian crossing and I was anticipating that a pedestrian could cross but not a cyclist. It was a near miss.

    Agree with the above.
I think also the fact that whether he was on a bike or on foot, someone moving at speed shouldn't just suddenly turn and cross the pedestrian crossing.
Whether they have right of way or not, they need to at least account for a drivers reaction time and give you or anyone else driving a chance to stop safely.
At least you were able to stop on time but lucky there was noone behind you with slightly worse reactions.
