What happens if you sell an item and dont send it by registered post. Can the buyer not just pretend they did not get the item even if they did and apply for a refund of paypal?

You say that in your listing and you are only bringing attention to the fact that the item is not been tracked .

The bottom line is , that if you cannot provide a tracking number , you leave yourself exposed to a claim for non-delivery .

If an eBay buyer is going to be dishonest and claim the the item never arrived , it is more likely to happen with valuable items rather than low-cost items .

As Paypal review the claim , they would see a pattern , if a buyer is periodically claiming non-receipt of item.

Even if you write in your listings that you are not responsible for items going missing in the post, if the buyer does not receive the item(s) they can start a PayPal dispute and PayPal usually refund the full amount, including postage.

I send everything via registered post, I wouldn't even consider using standard post anymore.

Yes, unfortunately Paypal & Ebay will favour the buyer 9 times out of 10.

Like someone else said, I like to believe that most people are honest. Im a medium-volume seller on Ebay, and in the past 6 months I have had around 5 "Item not received" claims. 2 of them I genuinely believe, the other 3 not so much. To be honest its really not worth the back and forth, as that will annoy the buyer and they will leave you a negative, and in the grand scheme of things isnt worth it.

My items are all a tenner or just under, so its more economical to write off the "lost" ones rather than pay extra on everything to send registered/recorded

I used to sell the xbox live cards on ebay, when I recieved payment I would email them on. Nice easy and quick system. But after a while I kept getting disputes saying they weren't recieved. At the end of the day I had to shut up shop and leave it at that.

I find that Italy , Spain , Germany and Canada are the worst offenders when it comes to claiming non-delivery.

Maybe its their strict Customs .

If you attach a label stating a return address , there is a possiblilty you may get your item back if it is not delivered . ( An Post recommend this anyway )

Is this the reason why so many eBay sellers write in their listings that they don't ship to Italy and Spain?

Even with tracking Italy is a black hole when it comes to tracking, they also have pretty stringent customs laws which also adds to the amount of stuff getting "Lost". That and the fact that italians will jump all over any opportunity to get something for free(apologies if that sounds bigoted but I got it direct from an Italian).

Spain is generally OK as they use the correos network which are pretty reliable for tracking

FYI you ARE responsible for items that go 'missing' in the post, UNLESS you send via trackable means.
Putting a term into a listing stating that you arent reponsible for items lost in the post not only is meaningless but untrue, and as was pointed out, COULD attract buyers to the fact that you dont post registered.. Tighten your buyer requirements up to minimize on risky buyers and try to offer only registered postage.
