not sure if this is the right place to put this mods please move if i'm wrong.

I just received a phone call to my mobile number from someone claiming to be from O2 wanting to discuss my account. She claimed I had gone over my number of allocated calls/minutes per month. I didn’t get much more info out of her because when I started to question her she said she had the wrong number and hung up. The thing that has me concerned here is firstly she didn’t ask for me by name, a service provider normally would nd more importantly they would know what type of acocunt i had. she assumed I was a bill pay customer instead of a pre pay customer.

I’m thinking this was a form of phishing trying to get bank account or credit card information. Basically I think she would have said I had gone over my limits and owed O2 money and that she could settle things now if I provided her my bank account or credit card details.

Remember that service providers won’t ask for your account number, pin, password etc as they already have it and they should have your name, address and date of birth on record already.

If in doubt take the person’s name and phone number and ask to call them back, then call your service provider on their actual published number which is available on all letters, bills received from them and on their website.

I spoke to O2 and they confirmed that they had not called me.

There a few simple steps to avoid getting scammed

do not give out any account details
do not give out PIN numbers
if in doubt ask them to verify something on your account that only they would have access to
