The Cycling Look

So I just got myself a nice new shiny road bike. Planning on heading out on my first journey either today or tomorrow weather dependent of course.

The question I have is does the feeling of looking pure ridiculous ease with time. I think I'm going to wear a pair of regular sports shorts over the padded lycra ones. I don't have a jersey yet due to money constraints so it'll have to be a t shirt over a under armour for the time being.

    but you don't look ridiculous...:pac:;)

If you do that everyone will think you look ridiculous, even your fellow cyclists.

    Thats fine, that's what I wear :)

Don't worry about what you look like, worry about how comfortable you feel

I fixed your question and the answer to the above in NO.
Sports shorts are not cycling shorts. Cycling shorts are for cycling and that is why they have the pad.

Anyway nobody really cares that you are in Lycra its only you who cares so think of something else.

Don't be silly. Assessing that something looks ridiculous is not shallow, it's a perfectly ordinary aesthetic judgement. Assigning that judgement a particularly high level of importance is possibly shallow, but I didn't write "people will think you are a worthless human being".

Wearing shorts over shorts for purely aesthetic reasons is just wrong headed, since it looks worse.

Ah that's all just a matter of taste. I keep doing funny thrusts at my wife in my "sexy" shorts and we have a great laugh about it. She says she will be entirely turned off me if I continue. The youngfella has started coming out on spins with me. He laughed hard when I suggested he get some lycra shorts. Cycling shorts are feckin' hideous looking things IMO. Normal shorts are significantly better looking.

You said everyone will think he looks ridiculous, and you highlighted Everyone to make it stand out.

You can't speak for everyone, speak for yourself

It was shallow, butter it up whatever way you want

FFS, just let the chap feel comfortable while cycling, he's not training for the TDF here!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,565 ✭✭✭✭Tallon

    Sorry? I am being serious.

There's no 'rules' for cycling, you do it for whatever reason you want!

What you linked to has no bearing on what someone wants to do when they are on their bike

    Cop on

You soon realise that alot of the "ridiculous looking" gear is practical...then just give in to it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

To be fair, a flappy, loose t-shirt over a pair of lycra shorts will look a little ridiculous. If you're going to be wearing "snug" shorts, then your entire ensemble should be equally snug. At a push, one of your wife/girlfriend's t-shirts might be snug enough to get away with it, but typically loose t-shirts or a football jersey (bleugh) with lycra shorts will make it look like you're cycling around in your underwear.

The baggy shorts look is OK provided that you wear a polo/rugby shirt, pair of shades and no helmet. Then you look like you're just popping down to the shops.

Correct and true, however, it's his first time on the bike, and obviously he's not going to want to fully suit up!

The rules of what? Owning a bike? Going for a cycle?

    Enlighten me

Alright, I'm jumping in here because the cycling mods are away.

Take it down a notch please folks. I think there's a bit of tongue in cheek being taken the wrong way.

shorts over cycling shorts is GAA :)

You will get used to it, but wear the comfortable gear. Get good shorts or your Bal"s won't thanks you :)

A tight top will be warmer and it won't be flapping around in the wind.

Enjoy yourself, you are joining a large and growing number of people.

You're just being defensive because you look ridiculous in your double shorts.

Ah the whole "the rules" thing is just a bit of an in-joke from what I can tell. I'm only getting used to it myself. I still note that when you look closely practically nobody has campo gear, despite the rules being very clear on the issue.

Lighten up FFS! In fairness the OP did ask about the "Cycling Look" and shorts over lycra with a flappy T shirt hardly qualifies!

Well I know someone who follows those rules religiously so I assumed these guys were the same die hard fans

    :o

I must ask, is this genuine?!

I'm quite a keen cyclist and wear the usual gear but I'd never judge someone for what they wore on their bike. I really couldn't care less TBH.

OP, what makes you feel that you look silly out of curiosity? Get into a good training regime and you'll be admiring yourself in the mirror in your lycra in no time :D

The question I have is does the feeling of looking pure ridiculous ease with time.
It eases pretty much the first time you go out without the over shorts. You think you're going to feel like an ar5e but you won't. Over shorts add extra loose material in your manly region which can gather up and move about and can cause extra friction and discomfort.

Whoops..... I didn't mean to kick off a big argument.

The Facebook page is obviously a piss take. I certainly hope so anyway.

I have intentions of getting the proper gear after a while but after shelling out a fair bit for the bike I couldn't afford to so I just went with a horrible looking cheap pair of black lycra padded shorts. That's why I was wondering about shorts over shorts which I actually don't think look as bad as some people make them out to be.
