I was interested in getting my daughter involved with this but it doesn't exist in Dublin 15, if I want it I'll have to set the whole thing up myself.

Do any of you know of any similar alternatives? She's 6 so a club might be a bit too serious for her.

    Thanks.

6 years old? She should be doing ultra's by now. :p

Seriously though, back in my day the community games local champs were always on in May with the counties on in June. All that would be left for 2011 would be the national finals in most sports. The year always resumed for us in March with the cross country.

I remember that Dublin was poorly represented for some reason in community games compared to other counties which explains why there is none in your area. It was possible 10-12 years ago at least to switch to another parish to compete, it was a matter of filling out a transfer form, cause we recruited a flyer from a neighbouring parish which had no community games to join our relay team :p. You could of course set one up in your area but it would be a lot of work, AGM's etc.

6 is a year or 2 early to join an athletics club i would think yeah.

I know Brothers Pearse won't take kids until they're 8, I think the others we talked to were the same.

If I recall correctly Community games used to clash frequently (but not always) with national BLOE championships. That was the main reason I use to never compete.

National finals on in a month. They tend to start training in Feb, for local/county finals in June/July. There's always a large ratio of Parent's helping: Parents standing around with fags in their gobs, so if you are interested in helping out, I'm sure you'd be made feel welcome. Info here http://www.communitygames.ie/

*Caveat: I'm coming from a rural background where these games are perhaps more ingrained in the Community than in urban area's.

Be aware that a local community games group has to partake in more than one activity so be prepared to organise chess/swimming/tiddly-winks or whatever alongside any athletics.

I'm sure some Dublin clubs have a Little Athletics program going which would be ideal at her age.

Thanks I've a rural background myself and the games were a part of that but I'm advised by the secretary for Dublin West that I can't get involved in another district so it's either DIY or nothing.

They do, but none local enough, I'm going to do the Athletics Leader training program run by Athletics Ireland in Sept which should set me up to get her interested in a fun way, maybe with some of her friends, then look at a club in a few years.

Thanks for all of your replies!

I've seen that many times with Community Games ... even heard of teams disqualified for having kids from just outside the area. We managed to extend our area by a few houses a few years ago to accomodate 1 child as long as we got the intervening houses to sign a letter of consent to move areas too!! Luckily there was just 1 house in the way. In D15, would that require many letters of consent? :-)

Wonder if the outcome of this court case would change any mindset in Community Games:-
