My brother is looking to buy a car from a local garage, they are looking for 3k for it however they advised him to bring his own mechanic to check it over. The garage wants to sell the car without any warranty at a discount price, they have given my brother the option to buy with a warranty also but the sale price will be much higher !!
Dealer says their are a few minor issues that need sorting but nothing serious, if he decides to buy the car at a discount price and signs an order form stating this is it too much of a risk ???
    Thanks for the advice

Sounds like they are offering a trade sale, as in sold as seen. They are right in advising your brother to get it looked over, if he can then he should do, car could be a good one.

My current car was sold to me "sold as seen",but with a new NCT.That was over a year ago and bar normal wear and tear has been grand.

Seems like they're being pretty fair if they're even advising him to bring a mechanic.

As the garage has mentioned a few issues then i would recommend buying it if he is fairly handy mechanical wise and can fix these problems himself, if he has to pay someone to fix everything its prob not worth his while

Indeed,I bought a car like this before, needed some work, short nct, etc.Had a mechanic come look over it for me at the dealership
Turned out well for me in the end ;)

What's the car out of interest, what's wrong with it?

Its a 01 CLK auto with 90ish thousand miles. Garage says wheels need balancing and tracking and it needs an exhaust gasket, apparently they have done quite a bit of work to it already including service etc.
    Thanks for the advice

It is not mandatory for a dealer to provide a warranty with a car he's selling. That said, the car he sells must be fit for purpose/as described.

Such a deal provides Op with a chance to get a car at a lower cost. By asking Op to bring his own independent mechanic the seller is being fair.

There's always the option to go elsewhere, no guns are being pointed at anyone's' heads here.

I understand that but i always understood that a warranty had to be issued to a consumer from a dealership unless it was a strict tradesale (i may be wrong).

I dont see the problem here tbh

Dealer knocks the price down as hes not selling car with warranty. If you want a warranty you pay more. Its commom enough to do this with cars of that age. Dealer even advising the customer to bring his own mechanic to make sure he is happy with the sale.

If you go with the trade sale the dealer will probaly write on the invoice that the car was sold with no warranty and you will have to sign off on that.

If your mechanic is happy with it and its a good price then happy days

Sounds to me that the garage are being very open about the potential issues and giving a good discount bearing this in mind and the lack of warranty, recommending the OP to get it checked over himself for his own peace of mind and even offering the option of a warranty if he'd rather go that route.

Can't do any better than that IMO.. if only all car dealers were so transparent and fair..
