    Hi,

I am thinking of going to Letterkenny September 2012. I was just wondering are there any childcare facilities? My child will be nearly 2 by then.

    Thanks.

I can't see any evidence on there web site to say that they do have childcare facilities, call the Students Union they'll know.

My friend reckons there is a creche across the road from the college but doesn't know the name. I was curious though because the course I would be doing is 6 weeks in college then 6 weeks on the job the whole way through I don't know how I would work it as I know I could lose my daughters place in creche if I took her out for 6 weeks at a time to put her near to where I would be placed. Aaah so much to sort out!

If you check out the Donegal County Childcare Committe website theres a list of creches in the area, the community creche is within walking distance of the college there are a few other full time ones but most are driving distance so require a car.
Perhaps a childminder may be more flexible if you will be on the job for 6 weeks at a time, if you check out the dealer(the local free adds paper, think available online) there are alwas childminders advertising or again the childcare committee.
Contact the students union and ask to speak to the welfare officer and explain your situation.

Says that a creche is in the planning stage and that fees for off site creche may be paid by the student union.

The prospectus makes no mention on the time frame of the project or if the fees for the [on site]creche will be priced at below the current market rate, an onsite creche would be handy for parents, but not so much if they cant afford it.

Also had a look at the LYIT development plan 2007 - 2013 it was compiled in 2006 and makes no mention of childcare facilities, the college should be working on the 2013 - 2019 plan this year it would be a good idea to talk to your class reps and ask them to contact the executive council and make sure that childcare is a pressing issue and ask if there will be reduced rates for students.

Remember its not an issue until you make it one

There has been no current talk this year about childcare facilities on the executive council, it has mainly been about the acquisition of the land across the road and up by the hospital.

There is a monthly childcare subsidy available from the student union, i think its monthly anyway and think its about 24 euro per week.

it used to be 35 a week paid fortnightly by cheque the year before last. they must have changed it. 24e wont cover even a day in creche! and you wont get it if your on the higher grant, the one with the special top up.

The only chat ya ever hear in college about childcare facilities is when the students union is up for re-election and then not a peep about it for the remainder of the time! hopefully someday they'll do it!

OP im sure if you could arrange with the creche that your only going to be 6 weeks in and 6 weeks out that they wouldnt let the place go, like how nurses and other proffessionals who dont work a 9-5 monday to friday do. and at the end of the day all they can say is no and so move on and ask the next creche.

    best of luck for september!
