    Hi all!

Can it be explained to me please what the difference in any given model is between

    Classic
    Avantgarde
    Kompressor
    Elegance

Let's say a C200. I understand Kompressor is supercharged and avantgarde is a trim, but how do the engines differ power-wise? And does Classic mean poverty spec?

Classic would be the lowest spec , elegance is next and avantgarde is the top spec. Kompressor applies to the type of engine used in that particular model.;)

Elegance and Avantgarde are different, rather than one being above the other. Elegance is more luxurious, Avantgarde is sportier. Remember also that trim is only a base - specification is what really makes the car.

Thanks shawnee. So Classic, Elegance etc refer to the interior, like leather, air con etc then?. Does that mean, for example, you can get Elegance in combination with Kompressor?

I believe Kompressor applies to the Turbo in the engine.

Yeah, I currently drive E200 Kompressor Elegance

Kompressor is not really a turbo

    Doesn't anyone have GOOGLE?

Kompressor is a supercharger, not a turbo.

What would be the power difference between your E200 and the same model without Kompressor?

Power output (and indeed cc) of the E200 varied over time, you'll find further details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_E-Class

    Slow and dangerously slow.
The E without the Kompressor is simply dangerously slow. (well the old ones are at least). The E200 kompressor is better indeed but by no means quick or fast.
Also, the Kompressor is a supercharger, which by all intents and purposes is a belt driven turbo.
It does not need exhaust gas pressure to spool up so the kompressor is in effect "always on".
Now you may think that this will help the car greatly when driving but the boost is so spread out across the rev range you won't get any turbo feel or "boost" feeling while driving.
    Just to be aware.

Since the W210 the E200 petrols have all been Kompressors because the engine is 'only' 1,796 c.c and with such a big body, without the supercharger you'd be going nowhere very slowly.

The C180, C200 and E200 petrol models share the same engine block (four cylinder 1,796 c.c.) but there is a more powerful supercharger in the C200 and E200.

Elegance is mainly about wood and chrome trim, Avantgarde is more about a sporty look. Selection of engine and trim are completely separate issues when buying C and E class Mercs.

On the 95-02 ranges, the E-class Avantgarde had different suspension settings, sitting lower than the Elegance/Classic spec.
As for other Mercs? I don't know.

    This.

Elegance will add wood, leatherette seats (normally), nicer alloys, chrome exterior trim. Avantgarde give half leather (iirc), lower suspension, bigger alloys, different exterior chrome, piano black trim instead of wood.

A/C would be on any of the 3 trims if it was standard, as would all electrics etc. Stuff like full leather, sunroof, upg stereo etc. would have been optional extras.

Thanks folks. I did try to figure this out on W'pedia etc, but there's an info overload. Much better from people who can share their own experiences.

to compare with what?! Not the fastest 2liter I've had so far but not the slowest either. E200 Kompressor is ok. At least a lot more economical and faster than Peugeot Coupe 2liter I had before. In fact this is the most economical 2liter engine I have had in my life.

According to wiki (not to be taken as gospel) the difference between the E200 and the E200K is 11hp! Hardly going to make much of a difference.

The E200 is 1998cc and the E200K is 1796cc which has tax implications. Also, the special K has 250 Nm or torque, when the bigger n/a engine had about 190.

Also, according to wikipedia the 06 models have 184 PS, not that bad for a 1.8 engine. I had a short spin in a 05 facelift model and I though it went quite well for what it is.
