Malaria 101 - Thailand and Cambodia

    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone could offer some insights from previous experience:

So, heading off for 3 weeks to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Chang, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh (in that order) and was wondering what precautions any of you folks took regarding Malaria tablets?

At this point I've had all necessary shots that I'll need and have received advice concerning Malaria danger zones etc etc. I visited a travel health clinic and they gave me a map outlining certain areas in both countries in which they felt I should use the necessary tablets. These areas were marked in pink by the way and the only time it appears that I'll enter one of these 'pink zones' is when I'm crossing over the border into Cambodia en route to Siem Reap.

Also, whilst in Chiang Mai it looks like I will be near one of these areas but not witin the coloured zone, I do however intend on doing a day elephant trekking or something while I'm there but Im not sure how far this will bring me in respect of this threat area.

The prescribed tablets are almost four euros a pop and I don't particularly want to be dropping one a day for 3 weeks if the risk is minimal, has anyone got any info or experience of these places and would like to throw an opinion my way? Do I forget about the tablets or try and time them for the two days I've mentioned (which will prob equal about 2 weeks of the hols on tablets in all as I must take 2 days previous to and for five days after entry to one of these zones)

I'll be using 50%+ DEET at all times also btw

Thanks in advance for your help people!

    Cheers ;)

You can't seek medical advice on Boards. Suggest you speak with your GP or travel vaccination clinic.
