I walked out of the bookies yesterday with an extra 800 in my pocket :D and I always said Id love to get myself a boat for ducks, so Im looking for a bit of advice. It will be used along the foreshore, and along the river... and I wouldnt rule out the odd lake here and there for fly fishing.

SO not knowing a whole lot about boats, what do ye lot recommend I should look into. I see a good few on donedeal but I have no idea at all what Im looking for to be honest. I guess just something as maintenanace free as possible, and very very importantly- it has to be light and easy to transport. SO any ideas lads?

17ft fibreglass boat with a 2 stroke engine. 2 stroke engines are much lighter than 4 strokes, and a fibreglass boat needs very little maintanance and will last a lifetime. Preferably with a galvanised trailer.

I've seen too many fellas going duck-shooting in bathtubs and it horrifies me to see them heading out in open water. Only 500 yds from my house 2 fellas died a few years back duck-shooting when there small alu boat capsized :(

I have a 19ft fibreglass lake boat for fly fishing and pike fishing. The 19ft is the most stable lake boat on open water and is quite safe in fairly rough conditions.

I have a 9.9 2stroke engine which gets me from a to b fairly quickly. Above 9.9, say 15hp, and you need to be very careful as you could turn the boat over. Below 8hp and things start to get much slower, maybe too slow on a large body of water.

These boats need to be launched and retrieved by backing a car and trailer into the water or down a ramp. They are not easy to launch in small lakes with limited access. However i've seen quite a few 19ft lakeboats with men out after duck over the years so i'd say thay are well suited to that purpose.

Anglers fancy, burke boats and sheelin are three versions that are well respected. Not sure if you'd get a good setup (boat, trailer, engine, oars, tank etc) for less than 1500 - 2000 though.

    Good luck:)

If going on a foreshore or river that is tidal you need a flat bottom boat for shallow water and the mud banks to easily slide about. problem with lake boats on foreshore and mud, if and when you get stuck:eek: you will have some job pushing the keel off the mud. youll give yourself a hernia:D A boat like a gondola would suit best. Oh and dont forget lifejacket

I have one of those already lad  So thats the last thing Id need.. would be for the boat to get stuck somewhere.
