Murray CJ's time is up this month. So who is going to be?

I have heard that Labour are pushing strongly for Denham. I would have thought Hardiman is surely in the mix as well.

Hardiman was a PD head, big mate of Mary Harney, no friends in the current administration plus his appointment was a blatant party political stroke in that he was dropped straight into the Supreme Court without serving time in the High Court beforehand so he has no claim on the job of CJ and is unlikely to get it.

So Denham should get the job for no other reason than that she is not a man?

While I agree with the fact that he only got it because he was a PD crony, just because he didn't serve in the High Court doesn't mean he has no claim to the role of CJ.

Murray CJ never worked on the High Court. I think he was Ireland's representative on the ECtHR or ECJ.

Not 100% on that, however it would show a progressionist society and also i believe that she would be the best person for the job.

I agree with a lot of her judgements?

Sorry, it's too late for the 'best person for the job' stuff, you kicked off with a sexist statement which basically said that the next CJ should be a woman just because it's 'time' which presumably means that the Govt. should disregard the relative qualities of any candidates who are not women.

Denham would be a good choice but as Lab got the Attorney General I imagine the Chief Justice job will be FG's.

Hardiman, as a former PD, has no chance.

Bad reason to appoint a CJ.

Good reason to appoint a CJ.

Mediocre reason to appoint a CJ.

Feels like a Goldilocks approach to judicial appointments so far.

Any talk of "it's time for a woman" is just so stupid it's unreal. Appoint the best person and it will be a woman when a woman is the best person. Then it will be "time".

Fennelly is the obvious choice - been there a long time - very clever - and universally admired and respected by colleagues and practitioners

If you are looking outside the Supreme Court then frank Clarke is the obvious candidate

Fennelly is almost at retirement age. Hardiman is seen as somewhat anarchic. No government wants a loose cannon as CJ.

Isn't it the place of the Supreme Court to set precedents as well as follow them?!?

Kelly J as an outside bet. numerous reasons why he wouldn't be considered, but still...

Snowball's chance in hell. It would make for a few interesting years though.

    Why ?

Good judge alright but why do you see him as an axiomatic choice ?

    Don't forget Kearns P.

I suspect that Fennelly J might well be the best bet. As far as age goes I don't see that as a bar especially if it would suit to have a change of CJ within a short period of time.

I would be perfectly happy to see Denham J get the position on the basis of her considerable ability as distinct from her gender.

Mary Wilson (Drivetime RTE Radio1) has just reported that the Govt is to nominate Susan Denhem as next CJ.

Deserved, she's been an excellent SC judge

I see that current CJ Murray will remain as an ordinary justice of the SC, has this happened before?
