The German Resistance 3 bundle has led to speculation about the launch of a new online initiative called PSN Pass.

The game and console bundle packaging clearly refers to something called "PSN Pass," along with the disclaimer "PSN Pass Network features only available in countries that have PlayStation Store."

Resistance 3 is set for release on September 9, suggesting that the PSN Pass will either be launched simultaneously or in advance of that date.

The new feature will most likely be similar to those used by EA and THQ, which discourages consumers from buying pre-owned games by locking multiplayer modes and special content to specific codes. Players who buy second hand must then purchase a new code to access that same content.

Sony hasn't yet commented on the discovery, but has previously spoken to GI about online passes. In August last year Andrew House, then president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said Sony was supportive of the model.

"On the principle of making online portions of the game available or unlocked from the disc-based release for a fee, we’re broadly supportive of that. And we’re exploring actively the same option for our own content."

It's going to completely change buying PS3 pre-owned games!

You'll need to pay for online for that anyway.

I don't mind passes like this because well basically the developers get nothing from second hand sales... and by my purchasing that means the developers are probably only getting maybe 5-10% of sales at all :o unless it's a real stand out title I always wait a few months and get it second hand so none of my money ever reaches the developers... feel bad about it sometimes but then again I'm not spending €55 on a game when I can wait 3 months and get it for €25

the only people profiting from second hand sales are the Game Gamestop and the likes and in fairness that isn't right at all...

but - if any company charges me for a game pass and then tries to release paid for DLC    then I'll not be happy at all...

if it's only €5 or so I won't mind but anything above that is starting to get pretty rough... €10+ and I won't be playing the game online simple as

I think its a terrible idea, i don't mind paying for a pass for the full game but if its only for the online side of things it means developers will put most of their effort into making everything online and very little in the single player aspects.

You can already see it happening with lots of FPS starting to come in around the 5-6 hour mark of generic missions.

You will never buy another game with an Online Pass system because of being inconvenienced once by an extremely rare issue?

So instead of buying a cheap game and optionally paying a once-off €5 for the online, you will pay a compulsory annual sum for online play instead?

I can certainly see this becoming an issue.

What if the Pass system has an expiry? After six-nine months, you no longer need a Pass to get online for a second-hand game?

Eh why are people gettin so annoyed by this?

The online pass thing has been going around for over a year now, it's gonna be the same thing EA, THQ and whoever else is doing it right now with their online gaming pass!!!

Is it any different to buying pre owned EA games on the XBOX 360?

I'd rather devs gave a better incentive to buy games new something like free dlc

It would have to be day 1 DLC or most would not bother as they would likely be finished with the game if the DLC came later, and if it was day 1 then people would bitch about that as they would see it as cutting something off the game for DLC.

If a new games came with some good DLC that rewarded new game buyers it would still mean that there would be costs involved with used game player going online, higher new sales would fight against this but it would vary with each game and may not always be enough to justify the extra work that went into the DLC even if DLC sales were included.

Absolutely, pre-owned games sales on PS3 are much higher than XBOX. A lot of people won't pay around €30 for a pre-owned game only to have to pay another €10 to have online access

That's the point it to make a few extra people pay the €5 more for a new copy of the game.
