My grandfather's beetle, SCI 78, a beige 1200 which he sold in '99 when it was getting too hard for him to drive it and he got a brand new lupo which he still has. He has great memories of the beetle and i was talking to him recently about it and he said he'd like to know is it still alive somewhere?

It was sold from limerick in 99 and from waht i remember it was in fairly good shape.

Was fear of the impending NCT a factor in the sale too?

Tell George that the beetle was dismantled for spares. There are pics of it in a scrapyard on eircooled site.http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz49/CoxyGT/Image0017.jpg

It is and he may be a little sad to know that but i'm sure he'd probably prefer that to it having just been crushed and not used for anything else

No, he felt he was getting too old for the heavy steering and had an artificial hip and knee and the other hip on the way out. Something a bit easier for an old man to drive and a bit smaller was required. Around that time he sold a small site and had some spare money so bought the lupo new and still ahs it with about 30,000 on it.

Indeed. That's why i asked, such a widespread network or car nerds often throws up results quickly. A shame to see it that way as i spent many hours in that car but as i said at least it ended up broken for parts and not baled while intact or rotting in a ditch
