Being stereotyped because of your job

    Does it happen to you??

My own (not so supportive) boyfriend said something along the lines of how he assumed all beauty therapists were "brain dead bimbos" until he seen the amount of work that actually goes into the course.

It got me thinking -- Are you stereotyped or do you fit your jobs stereo type??

If youre in IT do you sit at home all weekend playing call of duty?

    Work in a call-centre.

Everybody assumes I'm either middle-aged, indian, or out to make your life harder.

I had this conversation a while back with a girl who works in HR, she was moaning about how they are stereotyped as bitches

She lives up to the stereotype

I'd say the people that are stereotyped far more often are those who are unemployed.

I know exactly where you're coming from. I write GAA reports for the local paper and everyone I know who has an interest in GAA automatically assume that I only LOVE talking abut nothing but the GAA on a night out. I don't mind if I'm out after the club have played or if Wexford have played, but drunks rotten the ear off ya about everything GAA does get quite irritating over time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 639 ✭✭✭omen80

Yeah I worked in IT so women just presumed that I was amazing in bed. It can be a lot of pressure sometimes!

I'm a Graphic and Web designer, people assume I'm a nerd, know about everything electronic, play Xbox/PS3 all day, and don't actually work at all. I match the description very well =P ..... But really, it's stupid!

he assumed all beauty therapists were "brain dead bimbos"

There were a few beauty therapy courses in my college, I went out with one for the girls for a while and I liked to think they were all closet lesbians that really enjoyed waxing each other and rubbing in the moisturiser afterwards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,792 ✭✭✭Gandalph

To be honest I do stereotype beauty therapists, in my head they are all sexy, but sadly in reality this isnt true (some absolute bowzers out there!), but wouldnt take their IQ into account, alot of clever girls like to go into this no? I mean beauty is a pretty big factor in most girls lives!

I wear a suit and everyone thinks Im a prick....Well I am a prick and all but I dont like people making that sort of judgement until I do something to deserve it.

Work in finance for 9 months, get blamed for financial crisis

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,493 ✭✭✭RedXIV

Yup I work in IT and get the nerd thing alot. Can't really argue with the stereotype, been fixing peoples computers etc for years. mainly because "fixing" it meant
    • installing a program
    • turning the router on and off
    • turning the wifi back on a laptop
    • removing a virus
    • defragging a drive
    • connecting a printer
    • connecting a monitor

I reckon about 3% of all the stuff I've been asked to do has been actively difficult to figure out. most is just people not having a clue about computers

I worked for Vodafone for a few years.

I used to work in Dunnes...people assumed I was retarded.

Now work in pharmaceuticals (work placement for college)...people assume I am a nerd (I am) but I still get a lot more respect than I did before.

as a former Gardener, most people stereotyped me as male... nice little jaw drop when i turned up for work... would have helped if they had read my name, but sure that would have spoiled the surprise :)

I'm a Taxi driver, people assume I'm a thieving hoar who takes the longest route possible, moans constantly, sweats like a pig, never cleans the car,is racist, and has two houses in Spain.
In my case, only one of those assumptions is correct:pac:

i work in travel and everyone presumes a) i get free holidays b) i can get them huge discounts even though i may have only met them twice in my whole life (as in, i can't even get my poor parents a good deal never mind some virtual stranger) and c) i know the price of a holiday to anywhere at any time of year off the top of my head (this is particularly HEADWRECKING on a night out when the last thing you want to talk about is work "ah go on just give us a ballpark like" )

I work in a B&Q store.... not doing very much

people ask me questions cos they automatically assume im a

    1. Builder
    2. Plumber
    3. Tradesman
    4. Showroom Expert for kitchens and Bathrooms
    5. Painter
    6. Decorator
    7. Lighting Expert
    8. Electrician
    9. Gardener
    I am none of these

(amazingly enough i should at least know something about these things but haven't a bog) :pac:

Seriously .... people come up with a product and ask me how would i attach this to the mains and so on

my reply "By picking up the phone and calling a electrician or plumber"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,194 ✭✭✭saa

I'm an Artists and people assume I come from a middle class family and have money behind me.

Why else would I chose such a ridiculous career with nothing to fall back on, I don't know either!

having done 'computers' in college my family would assume i'd know a lot about hardware. telling them it was software means nothing, as 'computers' should cover everything really. but i dunno about the stereotyping. i mean most of the people i know work with computers, I don't think anyone assumes i'm a geek.

*pushes glasses up on nose* :pac:

I genuinely sterotype anybody who works in charity as an immoral thieving scumbag.Comes from my youth having seen what goes on at ISPCC

Nobody actually understands what it is I do but the sterotypes are that I can predict the weather ,that I know Kung FU and that I can get loads of free stuff.

    None of which are true
