'Ring Virgins

A few of us, ring virgins, are heading to the ring at the end of September, before we go booking any ferries etc we would like advice on what route would be the best?

At the minute we're thinking Rosslare>Cherbourg rather than going across the UK.

It looks like we'll be doing this over 7 days, to be in Nurdberg for 2 days and 2 days in Amsterdam on the way home

So any advice welcome from any of you experienced 'Ring people :)

You want to head for Nurburg ...not Nuremburg! (which is 400Km further East!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,593 ✭✭✭tossy

    Indeed or Nurdberg! :D

Personally i'd go across UK but a few lads on the beer then the ferry could be fun!

I think i've said it before but hit the 'ring on a weekday if you are a first time visitor.

I was keen to go across the UK but it's an extra 300 quid in ferries alone so Rosslare to Cherbourg looks to be the better option

dont want to sound like a fag but if your ferrying it to cherbourg i would really recommend ye taking even a day to visit anywhere in normandy. a beautiful part of france steeped in history of course. town of bayeux is lovely

€180 return. Dublin to Holyhead is €139 one way

Overall your diving time is probably about the same although I imagine that Rosslare-Cherbourg will add 15 hours or so to the overall time. Would it be worthwhile calling Irish Ferries and/or Stena and trying to get a group rate. Cherbourg ferry is very cheap at that time of year as schools finished. Have you priced a cabin into the France ferry? Not sure I'd want a 19 hour ferry journey in a seat followed by a 900km drive before arriving to drive around the 'ring. That'll probably bring them much closer in price.

You are doing it wrong. Ring up Stenaline and ask them for a landbridge quote using Dublin-Holyhead and Dover-Calais. It won't be that much more than the Dublin-Holyhead section alone. Also by going that way you avoid being raped by the French toll roads. Factor in about €70 in tolls just to get out of France via Cherbourg.

Firstly, check to see the Ring is actually open on the days you intend going there. On weekdays it is often booked out for testing etc for days on end.

There are loads of ferries going from the UK to mainland Europe, you can also go via Harwich, Tilbury, Folkestone other ports apart from Dover arriving in several ports such as Calais, Ostend, Rotterdam and so on. Shop around a bit on the net, you should find something. You could also chance taking a last minute ticket, it can work out cheaper and you'll be more flexible if returning from Amsterdam.

If you decide to go via Cherbourg, consider visiting the museum in Loheac, you won't regret it. Its a bit of a diversion but well worth it.

........and yes we want pics! ;)

    €180 return.
For Rosslare to Cherbourg that sounds far too cheap.

Have you factored in the fact that theres normally compulsorary cabin / lounge seat reservations?
Even for a seat @15euro each way, thats 30 return per person or €120return if theres say 3 of you in a car.

That's the quote I got on the website last night. Won't be 3 in my car anyway.... she'll be going on a diet before she leaves the fat bitch

Personally Id go through the UK as 20 hours on a ferry (getting sick) is one event I don't ever want to repeat.

Its also faster to go the uk route.

Ferry Rosslare/Fishgruard then Eurotunnel train, Folkestone to Calais is the easiest and quickest route to take. Done several times, several ways, this one wins for me.

Done several times also, but Pembroke is much easier to get on to the motorway. Did Dover - Calais then.

The worst part is the drive in Ireland! 3 hours on Irish roads is worse than any 6 hours across the UK or 5 across the continent!

Dont see much difference with either Pembroke or Fishguard once you land. The road to PB is better though. Stena is a nicer boat and the journey is half an hour shorter so I have a preference for the fishguard route. I live just half an hour from Rosslare so the irish part of the journey is easy for me.

I'm very jealous Onkle! I'll be following this thread as myself/brother/bro-in-law and a few others intend on doing this in the next two years. Whats the financial situation at the 'ring now-a-days? I heard the company running it were in severe financial trouble?

Hey Onkle, Made the trip for the first time in '09. For what its worth - my recommendations:

Ferry - Landbridge all the way. We did the hard slog and kept driving - 21 hrs including ferry crossings - a lot faster then the Cherbourg route. and good value.

Hotel - We stayed in Hotel am Tiergarten in Nurburghttp://www.am-tiergarten.de/en/home/ It was vey good value (around €99 per night) - and a quality hotel. The restaurant in the hotel was very good - Steak on a hot stone especially! Hotel is also owned by the Schmidt family (of Sabine) with lots of memorabilia.

Then there's the main hotel trackside for food too which is very nice - and they let you sign the wall in the bar (alongside names like Jackie Stewart Ruebens Barichello etc...) Other than that the main hotel is expensive.

May be other options of B&B in Adenau village or Quiddelbach - check the web.

Track - buy multiple laps - they are cheaper, 4 lap ticket saves about €15. Look on the web for the 'touristenfahrten' times - thats the public sessions. Also don't drive the track if it is wet - dangerously slippy due to rubber deposits.

Enjoy it - would go back in a heartbeat - Drove my Landcruiser around it too!
Drove past it again in April and sooo wanted to stop in but was under pressure to make ferry!

    Hope this helps - Bob

That Rosslare ferry (Irish Ferries) is dog rough ... impossible to get any sleep on the bloody thing and its 19 hours which is long on a crappy boat.

I did the Dunkerque - Dover then Liverpool - Dublin and then the same way coming back.

The Liverpool Dublin Boat is mainly for Truckers, however the cabins are great and plenty big, with a proper shower and large enough bathroom (as ferries go)

The only arsey part was the M25, bloody variable speed limits and cameras every kilometer ... GRRRRR...

The Dover - Dunkerque crossing with P&O is grand, very quick and the facilities on board are great, goes every 2 hours as well, just incase you miss it.

Don't fill up on the Motorway near Dover !! The fuel prices are nuts !!

Dunkerque - Dover route cost me 100 euros return, which is pretty good I think, the Chunnel for the same time was around 180 return, but is only a 35 minute crossing. Personally I preferred the chillout time on the boat.
